Javelinas complete season sweep of Dustdevils

Four players score in double figures in 90-67 win

LAREDO, Texas – Spurred on by a 52-point second half, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program finished the season sweep of Texas A&M International on Monday at the Kinesiology and Convocation Center with four players scoring in double figures en route to a 90-67 decision to wrap up the home-and-home.

"I thought it was a good team win overall," said head coach Wade Scott. "We had a good start by the first five and our bench did a great job of helping us stem the tide when we got into foul trouble.

"Danielle [Meador] was huge in the second half for us as she overcame foul trouble and provided a strong look on the boards and on defense. Brynae [Thompson] played well and Ravae [Payne] and Cloe [Lane] hit their shots and made big plays when we needed them."

Junior Brynae Thompson (Houston, Texas) once again led all scorers in the contest with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor. It was her seventh game of the year scoring in double figures for the Javelinas (3-6) to keep the Dustdevils (0-11) out of the win column.

Sophomore transfer Ravae Payne (Pearland, Texas) provided the spark off the bench with a season-high 17 points, to go with three assists, three steals and a 5-for-9 clip. Senior Cloe Lane (Kansas City, Mo.) was one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a season-best seven steals.

Junior Danielle Meador (Corpus Christi, Texas) added an eight-by-eight between points and rebounds in the contest, while sophomore Bri-Anna Soliz (San Angelo, Texas) hit all four of her shots on her way to 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Blue and Gold put together a six-point lead at 10-4 by the 6:12 mark of the opening frame as Soliz connected for four of her own. The Dustdevils were quick to respond and trimmed the cushion to one at 10-9 with a trey from Vanessa Oyola with 5:36 remaining, but TAMUK came right back and fired off a 14-3 run to close out the quarter for a 24-12 lead going into the second stanza.

The Javelinas were up by as much as 19 in the second, owning a 38-19 lead at one point, but TAMIU took advantage of a TAMUK scoring drought and put away the final 17 points of the quarter to set the line score at 38-36 favoring the visitors heading into the break.

The drought finally ended at the 8:43 mark of the third with Soliz driving for a layup that gave the Javelinas a narrow 40-38 cushion, while a subsequent layup from Meador ignited a 12-4 burst for the Blue and Gold that resulted in a 52-42 advantage with 4:25 showing on the clock.

TAMIU never recovered from the brief run as they trimmed the deficit back to eight at the four-minute mark, but the Javelinas methodically put the cushion at 14 for a 62-48 lead going into the final quarter.

TAMUK kept the cushion in double figures with the hosts never getting closer than 10 in the fourth. Meanwhile, Thompson pushed the Blue and Gold to the 90-point mark with consecutive free throws with 2:09 remaining in the game to provide the exclamation point.

The 90-67 final was the first time in the 2018-19 campaign where the Javelinas reached 90 points in a game and the most since TAMUK put away 91 in a triple-overtime heartbreaker to Cameron on February 3, 2018.

The Javelinas will resume their schedule on December 30 with an exhibition game in the Alamodome against UTSA.
