Younger Runs for 116 yards, but Javelinas fall to #13 Mustangs

TAMUK totals 420 yards of offense, forces two turnovers

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Despite 116 rushing yards from Marcus Younger and 420 yards of total offense, the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team dropped a 35-13 decision to No. 13 Midwestern State on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Freshman Cade Dyal made the start at quarterback and completed 27-of-43 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown. He has not thrown an interception in 67 attempts in 2017. Jordan Thomas led the team in receiving yards, with four grabs for 88 yards and a score.

FIRST QUARTER

After each team punted to begin the game, Kuziah Ferebee stopped a scoring threat by the Mustangs with an end zone interception, preserving a scoreless tie, but Midwestern's offense was soon knocking on the door again.

The running of Adrian Seales and a 19-yard completion to Tyrique Edwards helped move the ball to the TAMUK 37, where Vincent Johnson ripped off a 30-yard carry. Two plays later, he crossed the goal line from two yards out for the first score of the evening.

SECOND QUARTER

Less than two minutes after their first touchdown, coach Bill Maskill's offense was back on the field and they took advantage of the opportunity. A play-action fake by Layton Rabb sprung Dorian Johnson open for a gain that put the Mustangs at the Javelinas' 12 and two plays later Johnson and Rabb hooked up again, this time for six points from 11 yards out and a 14-0 lead.

After a three-and-out and a short punt, Midwestern State drove to their third TD of the half, an 11-yard dash by Adrian Seales for a 21-point advantage.

The Javelinas got on the board late in the quarter. After taking possession at their own 43 and picking up a first down, they were confronted with a fourth-and-one at their opponents' 38. Dyal hit Thomas on a crossing pattern and the senior turned on the jets and raced down the sideline and into the end zone. This score represented Thomas's fourth in the last two games and the Hogs went into halftime down 21-7.

THIRD QUARTER

Kingsville took the ball to begin the second half and covered 62 yards in 14 plays, highlighted by a fourth down fake punt in which Jacob Armstrong hit Stehly Reden for 30 yards. The drive concluded with a 30-yard field goal from Julio De La Garza that brought the Blue and Gold to within 11, but the home team quickly responded.

It took the Mustangs only five plays to move 73 yards and Rabb tossed a 45-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Myers to make the score 28-10 midway through the third.

Despite their three score deficit, the Javelinas battled back, converting a pair of third-and-long plays to move to Midwestern's 10-yard-line, but there, the drive stalled. Their 17-play, 60-yard march ended with another three points from De La Garza.

FOURTH QUARTER

Early in the final period, the visitors caught a break when a lateral from Myers was stolen by Peyton Tilley, who set up his offense with the ball at their own 45. Aided by the running of Younger and a 30-yard connection between Dyal and Thomas, Kingsville moved inside the 10, but on fourth-and-one from the five, Younger was stopped for no gain, ending the possession. Midwestern State closed out the scoring on a one-yard run by Vincent Johnson with 8:12 to play.
