SAN ANGELO, Texas (Baseball) – Pablo Hernandez and
Hunter Perkins doubled but #RV/RV West Texas A&M University's (33-16) pitching propelled the third seeded Buffalos to a 3-0 victory over the second seed Texas A&M University-Kingsville (31-17) Thursday afternoon at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The loss puts the Javelinas in the elimination game of the 2017 Lone Star Conference Tournament, tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. versus the loser of No. 1 Angelo State University and No. 4 Cameron University.
Preston Plovanich came up clutch and got himself out of trouble, inducing third double plays to match 2017 Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year Marshall Kasowski in the pitcher's duel. However, West Texas A&M was able to strike first with a run in the fifth inning to end the zeros.
All WT was able to muster against Plovanich was the lone run but the left-hander's day was complete after 6.0 innings. Plovanich struck out five and threw 95 pitches.
A pitching change for TAMUK in the seventh woke up the West Texas bats as the Buffs plated two in the top half of the inning, extending the lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the seventh, A&M-Kingsville put the tying run on first with two outs after pinch hitter
Dallas Stefano was hit by a pitch,
Kohl Ullman walked and
Levi Zents roped a ball that was stopped by the first baseman.
Christian Caudle ripped a laser up the middle but Aaron Vallance made the snag to leave the bases juiced and a 3-0 WT lead.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Plovanich was tagged with tough luck for the second consecutive start and fell to 6-4 on the year. Kasowski improved to 9-4 with 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Dominic Yearego picked up his fourth save with a six-out appearance.
