SAN ANGELO, Texas (Baseball) – Hunter Perkins went deep in the eighth inning to make it a one-run game but Cameron University (30-19) defeated Texas A&M University-Kingsville (31-18) 9-4 Friday afternoon at Foster Field at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The Javelinas will now wait until Sunday to see if they receive a bid into the 2017 NCAA Division II South Central Regionals. The selection show will be streamed live on NCAA.com, beginning at 9 p.m. CT. The Hogs were No. 5 in the region this week and the top six in the region advance to the postseason tournament with the LSC, Heartland Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament winners receiving an automatic bid.
A new day began with a run in the first for the Hogs.
Kohl Ullman led things off with a single and the All-LSC honorable mention came around to score on
Pablo Hernandez's two-out single up the middle to put TAMUK in front 1-0.
The Javelinas tacked on another run in the fourth to extend the lead to 2-0 on back-to-back hits by Perkins and
Dax McCleary. The freshman doubled into the gap and Big Perk showed off the wheels as
Philip Middleton waved the senior home for the second run of the ballgame.
The Aggies took a 3-2 lead with a three-run fourth, forcing a pitching change for A&M-Kingsville. In the fifth, Cameron added a run on a solo shot by Cody Bower to make it 4-2 and followed with a run in the sixth.
With one swing of the bat, the Javelinas made it a one-run game with Perkins blasting a two-run shot – his fourth long ball of the season – in the eighth. However, the Aggies did the same in the bottom frame with a three-run shot by Leno Ramirez to go up 8-4. A fourth run came in and Cameron advanced to take on Angelo State University for a spot in the championship versus West Texas A&M University with a 9-4 victory.
