SAN ANGELO, Texas (Baseball) – #RV Texas A&M University-Kingsville showed why it is among the nation's leaders in on-base percentage and base on balls, tallying five walks in the fourth and fifth innings of game two en route to seven runs and a Saturday split at Foster Field as the Javelinas (20-9, 6-1 LSC) fell to No. 8/3 Angelo State University (25-8, 7-3 LSC) 13-3 in game one before taking game two 7-3.
Pablo Hernandez had a two-run double in game one and drove in three in game two.
Levi Zents' hit streak is now 11 following his 1-for-2 performance in the opener and 3-for-4 day in game two.
Alec Kana drove in two in game two, and
Jimmy Roche and
Christian Caudle combined to go 3-for-6 with four runs scored.
Preston Plovanich tossed his third complete game of the season in the game two victory.
GAME ONE
Hernandez drove in two on a two-run double in the first and Zents' single extended reached base safely streak to 13, tying Roche for the longest of 2017. However, the Rams were able to knot the series up with the offense exploding for 13 runs. With the double, Hernandez reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hogs began the afternoon with a quick 2-0 lead as Hernandez's double brought home
Joshua Croft and Zents. Croft led off the ballgame with a walk and Zents preceded Hernandez' two-bagger. However, the sophomore was thrown out at third trying to stretch it to a triple, ending the frame with two runs for TAMUK.
Isaiah Lybarger went 3-up, 3-down in the bottom of the first, but Angelo State capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting, taking a 6-2 lead with the big inning.
The Rams added three runs in the third and three in the fourth to take the second game of the series 13-3, after the Hogs scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single by
Hunter Perkins.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Lybarger (3-2) was charged with the loss after allowing nine runs – five earned – in 2.1 innings. Ryan Smith (6-1) earned the victory with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.
GAME TWO
Zents went 3-for-4 in game two, Hernandez drove in three and Kana added two RBI in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
ASU struck first with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the second. Zents' double in the top half of the inning clinched the 11
th consecutive contest the third baseman records a base hit.
The bats came alive in the top of the fourth as A&M-Kingsville strung together three consecutive base knocks after Roche began the frame with a walk. Caudle and Zents' singles loaded the bases. A balk brought home Roche and advanced runners into scoring position and Hernandez brought them home on a single, giving the Hogs a 3-2 lead.
A bases loaded walk to Hernandez in the fifth extended the lead to two. With one out in the inning,
Kohl Ullman singled, followed by a Roche single and Caudle walk. A pitching change brought the same result as
Alex Gonzalez welcomed reliever Joe Hauser with a four-pitch walk and Kana made it a four-run inning with a two-run single.
Plovanich was efficient on the bump and tossed his third complete game of the season to improve to 4-1 on the year with the 7-3 victory.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Plovanich struck out two in 7.0 innings, while Jake Matthys fell to 4-2 after allowing three runs in 1.1 innings.
