KINGSVILLE, Texas (Baseball) – The offense came alive in extras as No. 21/26 Texas A&M University-Kingsville (30-12, 15-4 LSC) defeated #RV/25 West Texas A&M University (31-12, 12-5 LSC) in 10 innings, 7-6, Saturday afternoon at Nolan Ryan Field.
With the temperature in the triple digits, the Hogs remain atop the Lone Star Conference standings with Saturday's split after falling in game one 6-1.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
West Texas A&M scored two in the first and held the lead behind the arm of Joshua Payne to take game one 6-1.
Preston Plovanich settled down but WT added two runs in the fifth and a pair of runs later to take 6-0 lead.
Pablo Hernandez extended his reached base safely streak to 24 games with a 3-for-3 performance in the first game. Hernandez registered two doubles.
Christian Caudle went 2-for-3.
The Javelinas scored in the bottom of the seventh on a fielding error.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Joshua Payne (8-3) earned the victory with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Plovanich (6-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs in 4.0+ innings.
Sebi Palacios retired the two hitters he faced.
GAME TWO
Free baseball at Nolan Ryan Field and the Javelinas overcame a 6-4 deficit in the 10
th with three runs on five hits to walk off in style 7-6.
Hunter Lehman went 3-for-6 with two RBI,
Alex Gonzalez went 3-for-5 and Hernandez was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Caudle was 2-for-6 with a ribbie and
Jimmy Roche reached safely with four walks.
WT got on the scoreboard first in the leadoff inning but TAMUK tied the game at 1-1 on
Levi Zents' RBI single.
In the third, Blake Weaver hit a solo shot but
Hunter Perkins drilled an RBI double in the bottom frame to tie the game at 2-2.
The Javelinas took a 3-2 edge in the fourth on a wild pitch and extended the lead to two on Lehman's RBI base knock.
WT tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the sixth.
That remained the score until the 10
th innings when the Buffs scored two runs on a single. In the bottom of the inning, Caudle drilled a single to second base to bring home Roche and make it a one-run ballgame.
Moments later, Hernandez's single and a fielding error tied the game and Lehman walked it off with a single through the left side, allowing Pablo to score and give TAMUK the victory.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Isaiah Lybarger struck out seven in 5.2 innings but picked up the no-decision.
Tyler Crouch (2-1) picked up the victory after retiring the lone hitter he faced.
Ryan Larison allowed three runs in 3.1 innings but received the no-decision. Justin McAllister (1-4) was charged with the loss after blowing the save.
