ODESSA, Texas (Baseball) – The offense continued to rake with 13 hits but the story Sunday was pitching as
Zach Wilson followed
Preston Plovanich and
Isaiah Lybarger's shutouts with 7.0 innings of four-hit ball in #RV Texas A&M University-Kingsville's (29-10, 14-2 LSC) 9-0 victory over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (8-33, 1-15 LSC) Sunday afternoon at Roden Field.
The right-hander struck out a career-high 11 in the blowout victory as the Javelinas won their ninth consecutive ballgame and swept the series over UTPB 6-0. Sunday's victory was a big one, putting TAMUK in the driver's seat as the Pack currently holds a three-game lead atop the Lone Star Conference standings. The top seed hosts the LSC Tournament May 11-13.
The pitching in the series was dominant, holding the Falcons scoreless in the final 28 innings.
Kohl Ullman extended his hitting streak to 13 and
Pablo Hernandez's reached base safely streak is now 22. The reigning Lone Star Conference went 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot. Hernandez finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI,
Alex Gonzalez added two hits and three ribbies, and
Dallas Stefano (2-for-4, two runs scored) and
Hunter Perkins (2-for-4) registered multiple hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Two runs scored in the leadoff inning as Hernandez's single was followed by a failed pickoff attempt to put Kingsville ahead 2-0.
The lead became 3-0 when
Jimmy Roche legged out his first triple of the season in the second. On the extra-base hit, Stefano scored after reaching on an opposite field single.
Gonzalez's RBI groundout in the fifth extended the lead to four and a sacrifice fly in the sixth by
Christian Caudle put the Hogs in the driver's seat 5-0.
Wilson continued to deal, tallying 11 strikeouts in 6.0 innings while allowing just four hits.
The seventh ended with Gonzo's second ribbie of the afternoon with singles, making it 6-0 Javelinas.
The runs kept coming in the ninth with Gonzalez and
Dax McCleary going back-to-back with RBI base knocks. The RBI was Gonzalez's third of the game.
The ninth featured three runs and
Jako Kelm entered the game for a scoreless ninth to put the closing touches on the sweep in Odessa and in the regular season series.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Wilson (4-2) struck out 11 in 7.0 innings of work.
Tyler Crouch and Kelm tossed scoreless frames out of the pen. Matt Szymczak (2-7) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs – four earned – in 6.0 innings.
