KINGSVILLE, Texas (Baseball) – Kohl Ullman continued to reach base at will in his 11
th start of the season, going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI from the leadoff spot,
Christian Caudle recorded two hits and
Alec Kana cleared the fences in #RV Texas A&M University-Kingsville's (24-10, 10-2 LSC) 6-4 victory over Eastern New Mexico University (27-15, 5-9 LSC) Saturday afternoon at Nolan Ryan Field.
The stadium was full of festivities with dogs, sheep, a goat, a horse and children engaging in an Easter Egg Hunt. It was also a gift for first base coach and assistant
Hayden Vesely, who was celebrating his birthday Saturday.
In the matinee game,
Zach Wilson tossed 7.0 innings to pick up the victory and give the Javelinas a series sweep over the Greyhounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first,
Alex Gonzalez hit a two-out single and Kana followed with his second long ball of the season – a two-run shot – to put the Hogs ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third, Eastern New Mexico tied the ballgame at 2-2, capitalizing on two Javelina errors. The score remained the same until the sixth when a liner was just out of the reach of Kana in center field, giving the Greyhounds a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom frame, the Javelinas threatened, putting
Levi Zents and
Pablo Hernandez on with no outs. However, Hounds shortstop Endy Villalona made an outstanding snag on
Hunter Perkins' screamer to turn two.
Zents came in to score and tie the game at 3-3 on Dwight Velarde's third pitch.
The defense came up big in the top of the seventh with Wilson picking off an Eastern runner for the second out of the inning.
It was a day of firsts for
Dax McCleary, who reached safely on a walk in his Javelina debut and the right fielder scored on Ullman's double as Kingsville regained the lead 4-3. For good measure,
Jimmy Roche followed with an RBI single for a two-run cushion. A passed ball brought home the third run of the inning.
ENMU put the tying run on second but could not complete the rally as the Hogs swept the Hounds 6-4.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Wilson was efficient in his 7.0 innings, striking out five and tossing 88 pitches. The right-hander improves to 3-2 in his sixth start of the season.
Jako Kelm picked up his third save of the season with 2.0 innings in relief of Wilson.
Nick DeArmond received the no-decision despite leaving the ballgame with a 3-2 lead. The right-hander went 5.2 innings and allowed five hits and three runs. Velarde was charged with the loss and fell to 3-2 after giving up three runs – two earned – in 0.2 innings.
