AUSTIN, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (13-7, 5-4 LSC) split the first doubleheader of the season against St. Edward's University (7-13) at Diane Daniel's Field on Tuesday afternoon. The two clubs will meet again in April.
After falling in game one 3-2, the Javelinas snapped its three-game losing streak against St. Edward's with a 1-0 shut out. Victoria Schoonard-Saborio was responsible for the single run as she went yard for the fourth time this season in the very first inning of game two. Schoonard-Saborio put the bat on the ball today averaging .500 in the twin bill and matching Roxy Chapa (.500) and Delila Gillespie (.333) with one run batted in. Haley Boyett batted .400 in the series and has the longest active reached base streak of 13 games. Boyett also has an 11-game hitting streak going and is one behind Schoonard-Saborio.Â
Game 1
Both defenses played strong through the first three innings where each team was held scoreless despite having runners in scoring position on multiple occasions. Randa Hatter struck out three batters and gave up two hits in those three innings.
With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Boyett singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chapa followed the junior with a single up the middle that brought in the first run of the series for the Hogs. The Hilltoppers responded and loaded the bases quickly in the bottom frame. They scored two runs on two hits with no errors and left three stranded to grab a 2-1 lead.
After two scoreless innings, Chapa recorded her second single of the day in the top of the seventh stanza. Lindsey Angelico pinch ran for the All-American and was sent home by a double from Gillespie to tie the game at two heading into the bottom of the inning. Unfortunately, St. Edward's pulled out the victory after Megan Hoffman put the team on her back to seal game one. The sophomore was hit by a pitch to lead off the final inning and advanced to third base off of two wild pitches. She then pulled a gutsy move by stealing home plate to give her team the 3-2 edge.Â
Hatter (3-3) moved to .500 in the circle with the loss and tossed her third complete game this year. She finished with four strikeouts and four walks, but threw five wild pitches in six innings. Ashlee Rex (2-5) threw a full seven innings and had seven put outs with just one walk against the 27 batters she faced. Â
Chapa was 2-of-3 at the plate and had one RBI. Gillespie drove in the other run with her lone hit of the game, joined by Longoria, Schoonard-Saborio, and Boyett who each registered one hit.Â
Game 2
Schoonard-Saborio came out blazing in the second game, accounting for the Hogs first two hits including her fourth homer of the season in the top of the first inning. The sophomore increased her multiple hit games total to nine, which paces the club.
Just one run was needed for the Hogs to claim the dub after the defense kept the Hilltopper's bats at bay, led by Breanna Smith who matched Ashlee Rex's performance in game one with seven strikeouts and one walk against 27 batters in her fifth complete game of 2017. Olivia Burdick (3-2) picked up the loss after four innings of work, giving up a hit per inning and earning the one run scored. Lauren Slatten relieved Burdick for the final three innings where she threw four strikeouts, passed on three batters and relinquished one hit verses ten batters.
Aside from Schoonard-Saborio's two hits, Chapa, Boyett and Lauren Oatman each logged one hit in the 1-0 victory. Â
The Javelinas will return home this weekend for a three-game series against Texas Woman's beginning with a single game Friday at 6 p.m.
