KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (13-9, 5-6 LSC) felt the effects of the game delays in Tuesday's doubleheader against Texas Woman's University (16-10, 6-5 LSC) as they were swept 8-4 and 2-0 for their first pair of home losses this season.
Texas A&M-Kingsville was led by Roxy Chapa who batted .500 in the series highlighted by her third home run of the season in game one. Chapa finished two ribbies and a 1.167 slugging percentage. Haley Boyett also had a batting average of .500 and is the team leader with a 15-game reach streak and 13-game hitting streak. Alexei Gonzalez, Lindsey Angelico and Abigail Mangold were all .333 at the dish and Rachael Longoria and Randa Hatter both added a hit in the series.
Game 1
After two innings with no runs scored for both clubs, TWU's Nicole Nordie led off the third with a double to right center field. Katy Stephens walked and Hazel Puempel drove in Nordie with a line drive single to left center to put the Pioneers on the board first. TWU batted a full round in the half inning and tacked on three more runs for a 4-0 lead.Â
The Javelinas responded in the bottom frame, staring with a leadoff single by Abigail Mangold. Longoria followed with a RBI double to left field, Schoonard-Saborio reached on a fielder's choice and Chapa singled to right field to bring home Longoria. With runners on the corners, Gonzalez hit one down the line and Schoonard-Saborio touched home plate to cut into the deficit 4-3.
In the top of the fifth inning, Texas Woman's struck again when Puempel doubled to plate two runners. Chapa sent a missile over the left field fence in the bottom stanza for her third of the season but TWU ended the fifth inning with a 6-4 advantage and extended the lead 8-4 after crossing two more runners off of Nordie's double to right field in the sixth.
Carlie Clark (1-2) picked up the loss after throwing 2.1 innings, giving up four hits and permitting five walks. Sarah Gilbert (3-0) put in 4.2 innings of work where she struck out three batters but relinquished seven hits. Both Clark and Gilbert each earned four runs.
Chapa was a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate with two RBIs and was a triple short of completing the cycle. Longoria and Gonzalez both had one hit and one RBI, while Boyett, Hatter and Mangold added the remaining Javelina hits.Â
Tori Bice (5-6) was credited the win for TWU and tossed a complete game with four putouts and handed out one free pass.
Game 2
The Javelinas bats was held in check in game two as Boyett recorded two hits and Angelico registered one for the home team. TWU scored one run in the fourth and fifth inning for a 2-0 lead, which sufficed for the shutout victory.
Abby Walker improved to 6-3 in the circle this year after throwing her sixth complete game and third shutout. Walker walked four batters and recorded five strikeouts, while Breanna Smith (6-4) tossed complete game No. 6 and produced three Ks and no walks.
In the fourth inning, Katy Stephens singled up the middle for the Pioneers and Puempel followed suit with a base hit to center field. Both advanced to second and third, respectively, off of a wild pitch and Bice's bunt scored Stephens. The ensuing inning was jump started by Nordie's second single of the game and was rewarded a few batters later after a left field RBI single from Puempel—who also had two hits in the final game of the day—drove the senior home.
The Hogs will have to have a short term memory as Oklahoma Christian comes to town tomorrow for a regional double dip beginning at 4 and 6 p.m.
