LAWTON, Okla. (Softball) – Despite a phenomenal offensive effort from the entire team, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (18-18, 8-11 LSC) was swept in the doubleheader against Cameron University (25-11, 13-4 LSC) on Friday afternoon at McMahon Field.
The Aggies had no answer for Victoria Schoonard-Saborio as she was a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate and led the team with five RBIs, four runs scored and a 2.000 slugging percentage. Schoonard-Saborio went yard in game one and was a home run short of the cycle in game two. Arabella Acosta-Cantu had a good day as she batted .571, followed by Delila Gillespie who had a .500 day at the dish. Rachael Longoria rounded out the top hitters with a .375 average and .444 on-base percentage.Â
Game 1
After scoring no runs in the first inning, CU put two on the board without registering a hit in the bottom of the second. Two innings later, they tacked on another run as Breezy McComas crossed the dish (reached on an error) thanks to a double from Abbey Warren. Â
The Javelinas picked it up with Gillespie's leadoff single through the left side in the fifth frame. After advancing to second, Schoonard-Saborio drove the left fielder home with a two-run bomb over the left center wall to trim Cameron's lead 3-2. Unfortunately, Paige Daino connected for her own two-run shot to push the lead back to three and helped ignite her squad. The Aggies went on to score three more runs for a commanding 8-2 lead at the end of the fifth inning. Cameron scored one more in the sixth inning to win the series opener 9-2.
Bethany Hines (18-5) was credited the win in her 17th complete game although striking out just two of the 28 batters she faced. Carlie Clark (2-5) received the loss after 4.2 innings of work where she logged five putouts (four looking) and walked four batters. Sarah Gilbert also had some time on the rubber where she struck out one batter in 1.1 inning.Â
Schoonard-Saborio was 2-for-2 at the plate, while Gillespie was 2-for-3. Longoria, Acosta-Cantu and Andrews each recorded one hit.
Game 2
The home team struck first but neither club could establish a sizable lead as the score was 5-4 in favor of Cameron through five innings.
Â
The action started in the seventh inning for both teams. Longoria hit an RBI single through the left side to tie the game and with the bases loaded, Schoonard-Saborio gave the club its first lead of the day with a triple over to right center field that scored three. The sophomore from Cali was rewarded as she scored her third run of the game due to a SAC bunt from Acosta-Cantu and Alexei Gonzalez put the finishing touches on the inning with a RBI single to center field to plate the second baseman. The Hogs ended the top of the inning with a 10-5 lead. Remarkably, a six-run inning was not enough to put the Aggies away as they matched the Javelinas six runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-RBI walk-off single from Alyssa Osterdock to clinch the sweep.Â
Hines (19-5) continues to add to her win total after pitching two innings. Osterdock did much of the work with three strikeouts in five innings with just one earned run. Gilbert (4-2) is charged with the loss although she threw less than one inning, while Breanna Smith tossed 6.1 frames and had an uncharacteristicly-low two strikeouts.Â
Schoonard-Saborio went 4-for-4 in the box, scored three runs and drove in three. Acosta-Cantu finished the game with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI, while Longoria had her 11th multiple hit game (2-for-5) of the season, scored once and had one RBI. Haley Boyett, Gonzalez, Lindsey Angelico and Randa Hatter each tallied a hit with Boyett and Gonzalez each logging a RBI.
The series will conclude with a single game tomorrow with the time moving up to 11 a.m. to avoid bad weather.
