KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – In honor of the new Power Rangers movie being released nationwide, the Javelina softball team showcased their power as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (16-16, 8-9 LSC) blasted three home runs in Saturday's 11-9, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of Texas A&M University-Commerce (22-11, 9-6 LSC) at Vernie & Blanche Hubert Field.
GAME ONE
Long ball was the story with
Haley Boyett and
Delila Gillespie picking up their first home runs of the season and the Javelinas scored 11 runs on 11 hits to take game one 11-9. The top of the lineup combined to go 6-of-10 with seven runs scored. Boyett went 3-for-4 with two RBI,
Rachael Longoria was 2-for-3 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot and
Victoria Schoonard-Saborio scored three runs. Gillespie went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A&M-Commerce jumped out to a quick start with three runs on five hits in the first. With the leadoff runner on,
Roxy Chapa showed off her arm, picking off Baylea Higgs at first base.
With two outs in the first, Boyett blasted a liner down the right field line to cut TAMUK's deficit to 3-1.
The Lions tacked on an unearned run in the second to regain a three-run lead.
The Hogs knotted it up in the second on a three-run shot by Gillespie.
Alexei Gonzalez led off the frame with a walk and
Lauren Oatman was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second for Kingsville.
The inning was capped off by a two-run single by
Arabella Acosta-Cantu as Longoria and Schoonard-Saborio, who walked and were hit by a pitch, respectively, came around to score in the five-run second, putting Kingsville ahead 6-4.
Boyett's bunt single in the fourth and Chapa's sacrifice fly added on to the TAMUK lead in the fourth. The Lions responded with a run in the fifth to which A&M-Kingsville tacked on three in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by Schoonard-Saborio's RBI single.
A&M-Commerce scored four in the sixth but
Breanna Smith came in and shut the door for his second save of the season.
Acosta-Cantu drove in two and Chapa collected two base hits.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Randa Hatter (4-5) tossed 5.1 innings in relief of
Sarah Gilbert and earned the victory. Smith picked up the save with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Selena Rima (6-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in 0.1 innings.
GAME TWO
Chapa's finished game two 2-for-3 with three RBI and Schoonard-Saborio scored twice in the 5-4 victory as the Hogs swept Saturday's doubleheader. Clark went the distance to improve to 2-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Chapa jolted the Javelinas to a 2-0 lead with one swing of the bat as the sophomore went yard to bring home Schoonard-Saborio in the first.
The Lions scored two runs in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2 but the Javelinas responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain a two-run lead. Schoonard-Saborio and Boyett walked to begin the inning and Chapa drove in her third run of the game on a single to give TAMUK a 3-2 lead. Moments later, Gonzalez drove in Boyett for a two-run cushion.
Boyett brought home Kingsville's fifth run of the ballgame on a groundout to make it 5-2 in favor of the Hogs in the bottom of the fourth.
WIN-LOSS RECORD
Clark (2-4) received the W after her third complete game. The senior struck out four in 7.0 innings of work. Katie Dean (8-4) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs in 2.0 innings.
NEXT UP
A doubleheader at the University of Houston-Victoria is scheduled for Tuesday. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
