CANYON, Texas (Baseball) – The #15/#21 West Texas A&M Buffaloes took two games from the #10/#15 Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas on Sunday afternoon at Wilder Park. WT won over TAMUK 9-4 and 13-0 to lock up the first of two series that the programs will play this season.
The Buffs improved to 15-2 on the season while the Javs fell to 11-4.
GAME ONE
The afternoon got off to a fast start for the Blue and Gold. The first two batters of the game (
Joshua Croft and
Christian Caudle) got on base off of WT starter Noah Draper. After a single by
Hunter Perkins loaded the bases,
Dallas Stefano hit a sac fly to put the Hogs on the board first. West Texas A&M would score two in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead after one.
The Javelinas put up a pair of runs in the 2
nd. A one-out walk to
Levi Zents would come back to haunt the Buffs as Croft singled him home two batters later. Two straight singles by Caudle and Perkins brought Croft around to put the Javs ahead 3-2.
Two big innings would haunt Texas A&M-Kingsville as WTAMU scored three in the 3
rd and four in the 4
th to put the game out of reach. Adam Adkins hit his second run-scoring double of the day to tie things up at 3 in the bottom of the third. Hitters 3-5 in the Buffs lineup (Adkins, Luis Amaro, Troy LeBrie) had two RBI's a piece. Chad Brown and Cole Sanchez combined for two hits and two RBI's.
Isaiah Lybarger (2-1) took his first loss of the year as he allowed five runs and seven hits over three innings of work.
Nick Hutchison,
Jako Kelm, and
Sebi Palacios each saw some action on
the mound.
Dominic Yearego (3-0) came up big after Draper was only able to log 1.2 innings. Yearego surrendered just one earned run and five hits while striking out six Javelinas over 5.1 frames.
GAME TWO
West Texas A&M prevailed courtesy of great pitching from their starter Ryan Larison. The junior transfer from Galveston College improved to 3-0 on the season by tossing a complete game shutout. Larison permitted just two hits and three baserunners over 7 innings while striking out 10.
The Buffs banged out 16 hits off of the Javelina pitching staff. WT had at least one run in each inning with their largest being the 5
th frame when six runs came across. The top four hitters in the lineup each had at least one hit and an RBI.
Zach Wilson (1-1) went three innings in his start, allowing four runs (three earned), six hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
After not notching a hit in game one,
Jimmy Roche had a nice bounce-back effort by going 2-3 at the plate in game two.
