COMMERCE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – She silenced the crowd all afternoon and put the closing touches on a career day with 3.3 seconds, finding all net on an off-balanced three-pointer to give Texas A&M University-Kingsville (11-11, 6-10 LSC) a 67-65 victory over Texas A&M University-Commerce (17-7, 11-5 LSC) Saturday in the Fieldhouse.
Debose scored 28 points on 9-of-14 shooting and went 3-of-4 from long distance. The 28 points were the most for a Javelina since
Sheana Jones scored 31 on the same floor versus A&M-Commerce Feb. 16, 2013. The victory snapped a five game losing streak to the Lions and was the first in Commerce since Jan. 8, 2014.
Debose was the story offensively but the defense forced 20 Lion turnovers and held Artaejah Gay to zero points in the first half and just 10 total on 4-of-14 shooting. For the Hogs,
Meesha Wade reached double figures with 12 points, eight in the second half, and added four assists and two steals.
Jaiton Walls picked up two blocked shots off the bench.
Despite struggling, Gay made two crucial jumpers with less than a minute remaining in regulation but the other part of the Alcorn State duo –
Angelica Wilson – drained both free throws with 23 seconds remaining prior to the game winning shot by Debose.
FIRST PERIOD
A&M-Commerce got off to a 7-0 lead and extended its edge to 13-4 at the under-5 media. However, the second unit of the Javelinas, led by Debose, finished the half on an 8-3 run to head into the second period down 16-12. Debose picked up six points on 3-of-6 shooting in the opening quarter.
SECOND PERIOD
A&M-Kingsville took its first lead of the ballgame with a 5-0 run to begin the period, capped off by a corner triple by
Kaylin Roher off the
Kaylee Kana extra pass. Moments later,
Madison Crawford found
Emmeri Archer for a trey from the wing as the Hogs regained the lead, 21-19, with 7:31 remaining. At this point, the Javelina bench outscored the Lions 12-0.
At the half, A&M-Commerce was in front 33-29 behind 10 second chance units. Debose posted a career-high 14 points in the opening half on 5-of-9 shooting.
THIRD PERIOD
Tee Moore scored five points in the opening minutes of the second half as the Javelinas went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 44-42, with 4:15 remaining in the game. Checking back into the game, Debose took control yet again, finishing with Kingsville's final six points of the quarter to reach 20 and giving the Hogs a 52-48 lead. The Javelinas outscored the Lions 23-15 in the third.
FOURTH PERIOD
The break didn't cool off Debose as the Houston native began the period with her second three-pointer of the ballgame. On the ensuing offensive possession, she drained one-of-two (scored 10 straight for TAMUK) from the charity stripe to extend the lead to eight. The three point shots for Commerce brought the home club within two with just over six minutes remaining and a steal/fast break bunny tied the game.
With 4:26 remaining,
Meesha Wade drove to the bucket that was initially called a charge. However, the officials reversed the call and the senior guard drained the free throw for the and-one and three-point lead for A&M-Kingsville.
At the 2:28 mark, Wade swiped at a pass and looked that was also reversed to a jump ball, giving the senior her second steal of the game and Kingsville the possession.
Eight of Wade's 12 points came in the second half. Brianna Wise fouled out with nine point and 1:29 remaining, sending Debose to the line. The freshman hit the first but despite connecting on the latter; the Hogs were called for a lane violation as the Hogs led by two with less than a minute remaining.
Gay came up huge much like she has all season for TAMUC, finding the bottom of the nylon on what was a quiet day to give the Lions a one-point lead with 49 ticks left to play.
Angelica Wilson was calm and collected at the line and hit both to give TAMUK a one-point edge with 23 seconds left.
Another game came down to the wire as Jelly and AMC were called for a jump ball after a Lions miss, giving the home team a chance to put themselves in front with 12.7 seconds left. After the timeout, Gay scored with 9.4 ticks to give AMC a one-point lead.
With ice running through her veins, Debose was money with an off balanced three – her third of the afternoon – with 3.3 seconds left for the game winner.
