KINGSVILLE, Texas – Angelica Wilson amassed 11 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball was defeated by the Cameron Aggies, 51-39, on Thursday night in Kingsville, Texas at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
TAMUK emerged from this contest plus-eight in turnover margin, forcing 19 while only giving up 11. The Hoggies also grabbed 10 steals.
Wade Scott's bench contributed 15 points and the home team also outscored their opponents in the second half, 27-20.
FIRST QUARTER
The teams opened the evening by exchanging baskets twice before a 14-0 run by the Aggies provided them with a commanding lead. Buckets by Amaka Nwakamma and Jamie Bonnarens started the rally and Ava Battese added a triple for a seven-point lead. Bonnarens tossed in another jumper and Martinez then hit from long range. The run was completed with Bonnarens's third basket of the quarter and Cameron led 18-4. A jumper by Sadie Russell closed out the first quarter scoring.
SECOND QUARTER
Two points from by Nwakamma and Parfitt McNair and a triple from Bonnarens pushed Cameron's lead to 19, but TAMUK scored the next six to close within 13. Victoria Salinas started the spurt by knocking down a jump shot and Wilson added a layup. A jumper by Kristina Kana brought the home to within 13 with just over a minute before halftime. The last flurry of the half belonged to the Aggies, however. Consecutive triples, the last one courtesy of McNair as the buzzer sounded, restored Cameron's 19-point advantage as each side headed to the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER
A 7-0 run that included a trey and a layup by Madison Crawford began the second half and sliced Cameron's lead to 12 before McNair sank two foul shots and Lehja Smith tossed in a layup and added a free throw. A Sadie Russell three was answered by another Smith layup to make the score 38-22 after three periods.
FOURTH QUARTER
Jaiton Walls converted the night's first three-point play just over a minute into the final quarter, only to see the visitors respond with six straight points, putting TAMUK 19 points behind. The Javs cobbled together a 9-2 run to move within 12. Kana contributed five points and Wilson was responsible for the other four. When the Aggies scored five of the game's next six points, their lead grew to 51-36 and Wilson scored the night's final three, allowing her to complete her double-double.
