Moses Totals 14 Tackles, Thomas Catches Two Touchdowns in Loss to Mustangs

Penalties, Turnovers Plague Javelinas Loss

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Trevor Moses totaled 14 tackles, including two for losses, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville football team (3-7, 2-5 LSC) dropped a 35-23 decision to the Western New Mexico Mustangs (3-7, 2-5 LSC) on Saturday afternoon at Altamirano Field in Silver City, N.M.

Nick Pelrean led the way for TAMUK's offense with 78 yards rushing and a team-high four receptions for 21 yards receiving and one touchdown. Jordan Thomas caught 3 passes for 57 yards and two scores. He's now 178 yards away from matching Glenn Starks program record for receiving yards in season at 1,156.

On special teams, Julio De La Garza dropped three punts inside the 20 and Keith Whitley averaged 19 yards on three punt returns.

FIRST QUARTER
Western New Mexico's special teams started the scoring after the Javelinas went three-and-out on their first possession. With De La Garza set to punt, Ian Davis stormed in and blocked the kick, then scooped it up and stumbled 20 yards for the day's first score. Kingsville got on the board a little more than six minutes later, when an 11-play 26-yard drive set up a De La Garza 28-yard field goal, but the Mustangs crafted a quick response. Quarterback Javia Hall and running back Justin Harris moved the offense 80 yards on 11 plays and the march concluded when Hall connected with Sean North for a 40-yard score and a 14-3 edge.

SECOND QUARTER
The second period was scoreless for nearly 12 minutes before both offenses started trading touchdowns. After getting the ball on their own nine, the Mustangs moved to their third TD. Aided by the running of Harris and a roughing the punter penalty on TAMUK, WNMU took the ball to the Javelinas' 13. From there, Hall connected with Bowie on a fade for his second scoring throw of the afternoon.

After a failed onside kick attempt by the home team, Kingsville got the ball at their opponents' 29 and, on a flea-flicker, Cade Dyal hit Thomas down the left side for touchdown, cutting the Javs' deficit to 11 with 2:58 to play in the half, but Western New Mexico had another answer in store. A 52-yard burst by Justin Harris resorted the Mustangs' 18-point edge as both teams headed to the locker room.

THIRD QUARTER
After the half, the Javelina offense came out on fire. They took the ball on the first possession and went 69 yards on five snaps, capped off a by 33-yard run to paydirt by Pelrean. Later in the quarter, the Hogs got the ball at their own 37 and went to work again. A fifteen-yard gain on a completion to Thomas combined with a roughing the passer penalty moved TAMUK in to the red zone. Two plays later, Torrey Thomas took a lateral and found Jordan Thomas wide open in the end zone for score. A missed two-point conversion made the score 28-23 with 2:48 to play in the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
Early in the final quarter, Kingsville's offense got the ball again and began to move. Completions to Jeff Carr and Roe Posada yielded first downs and a short Jeff Carr run moved the chains again, giving the Javs a first down at the 14. On second down, however, Western New Mexico made the key play of the game. Rushing from Dyal's blind side, James Lee sacked the quarterback and knocked the ball loose. Joe Tito recovered and gave his team's offense the ball at their own 38. From there, Hall completed five passes, three for first downs, with the final one finding D'Angelo Bowie for a TD. After a three-and-out by TAMUK, the Mustangs got the ball back and ran out the clock.
