KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – Meesha Wade and
Ope Ibrahim posted career-highs in the scoring department Saturday as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (9-7, 4-6 LSC) defeated Western New Mexico University (4-13, 0-10 LSC) 71-62 in the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Wade finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting and added seven rebounds while Ibrahim came off the bench with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and four rebounds.
Kaylin Roher connected on four triples en route to 16 points and
Tee Moore added 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
FIRST PERIOD
The Javelinas held a one-point lead through the game's opening period. Roher led the way with five points.
SECOND PERIOD
A&M-Kingsville and Western New Mexico traded points in the second half but the Hogs were in front 27-24 with 2:21 remaining in the first half following Moore's free throws. Wade hit a midrange jumper in the closing seconds but a three at the buzzer by the Lady Mustangs tied the game at 31-31 after the first half.
Wade was the game's leading scorer with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the opening stanza Ibrahim came off the bench with six points and
Lily Hospers pulled down six rebounds.
THIRD PERIOD
Ibrahim and Wade continued to carry the load offensively as the Hogs extended their lead to seven with 5:11 remaining. Ibrahim had 11 points and Wade scored 14 to this point.
The lead reached double figures on Roher's first triple of the second half and the senior connected on another from the wing to tie
Ashley Viera for eighth place on the all-time three-pointers list in school history.
Following the trey, Ibrahim tied her career-high on a transition bucket off Hospers' dish. Seconds later, Ibrahim scored again, capping off a 7-0 run with a new career-high 15 points. Her previous mark of 13 was versus Eastern New Mexico University Jan. 13, 2016.
The Javelinas connected on three from long distance in the quarter to end the frame with a 57-49 lead.
A&M-Kingsville caught fire in the third, shooting 64.3 percent and outscoring the Lady Mustangs 26-18.
FOURTH PERIOD
Texas A&M-Kingsville put the closing touches on a 71-62 victory over the Mustangs with a balanced fourth quarter.
Wade and Ibrahim were the story with 18 points and 16 points, respectively, with Roher adding 16, 12 from three-point range.
ABOUT THE LADY MUSTANGS
Jordan Gutierrez and Keshaun Clark scored 17 points apiece and Jade Botelho added 13 points.
NEXT UP
The Javelinas end the road trip with a midweek tilt versus nationally-ranked Angelo State University. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m. Tuesday from the SPEC.
