KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – Outscoring the Greyhounds 14-9 in the second period, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-7, 3-6 LSC) took its first lead of the game in the closing seconds of the first half but #RV Eastern New Mexico University (13-3, 9-0 LSC) scored 34 points in the second half to escape the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court with a 63-52 victory Thursday evening.
Kaylin Roher eclipsed double figures with 14 points and added four steals but the highlight for the Javelinas was
Angelica Wilson, who finished with five blocked shots and five rebounds in her first game of 2017.
Three players reached double figures for the Greyhounds, led by Mikaehla Connor's 17 points. Kassandra Harris came off the bench with 15 points and nine rebounds.
FIRST PERIOD
Wilson made her return and picked up two blocked shots and four rebounds in the opening period. Texas A&M-Kingsville trailed 20-14 after one.
SECOND PERIOD
Late in the first half, the Javelinas trailed 27-20 but an and-one by
Joslyn Smith with 1:27 remaining in the frame cut the deficit to four.
Ending the second period on an 8-2 run and a block by
Meesha Wade, A&M-Kingsville took its first lead of the game with 25.9 seconds on Roher's and-one. The Greyhounds closed out the half with a second chance bucket to head into the locker room with a 29-28 lead. Roher had nine first-half points and Wilson recorded three blocks and five boards in 11 minutes.
THIRD PERIOD
The back and forth continued with the lead changing several times prior to the 4:14 mark. Eastern New Mexico exploded on a run to extend its lead to double figures heading into the final period.
FOURTH PERIOD
The Greyhounds hot second half continued with an 11-1 to begin the final quarter of regulation with a 55-35 lead. With one minute remaining, the Javelinas chipped away at the deficit but it was too much to overcome as Eastern New Mexico held onto its top spot in the Lone Star Conference, improving to 9-0 on the year.
