Second Half Lady Buffs Surge Dooms Women’s Basketball

Javelinas head home for three games beginning Thursday

CANYON, Texas (Women's Basketball) – A five-point Lady Buff lead was extended to double figures in the second half as West Texas A&M University (13-4, 6-2 LSC) defeated Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-6, 3-5 LSC), 73-50, Saturday afternoon at the First United Bank Center.
  FIRST PERIOD
Despite the sloppy start, the Hogs and Lady Buffs were tied at 2-2 with 4:14 remaining in the period. Kaylee Kana's corner three gave A&M-Kingsville a 5-2 lead with 3:25 left to play. The Javelina defense forced nine turnovers while limiting West Texas A&M to zero points in 8:40.
 
Kingsville ended the quarter on a 14-3 run to head into the second with a 14-5 lead. Shaq Debose scored five points off the bench and Meesha Wade had three rebounds, two assists and two steals. All in all, the Lady Buffs were 3-of-12 and could not take care of the ball, recording 10 turnovers in the opening stanza.
 
SECOND PERIOD
West Texas opened the period with five points to cut its deficit but Reni Alfred's easy layup off the dime from Wade gave the Hogs an eight-point cushion with 5:29 remaining in the frame.
 
The Lady Buffs went on a 15-2 run to take their first lead since the game's opening bucket and ended the first half with a 25-20 lead. Debose led the Javelinas with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting.
 
THIRD PERIOD
WT came out firing and extended its lead to 13 with 5:19 left to play in the third. The Lady Buffs scored 31 points in the period to head into the fourth with a 56-33 lead.
 
FOURTH PERIOD
The second half unit for TAMUK saw the majority of action with Alfred, Madison Crawford and Ope Ibfrahim seeing action in the closing minutes. The game ended with A&M-Kingsville falling to West Texas A&M 73-50. Hospers and Tee Moore led the Javelinas with eight points apiece.
 
ABOUT THE LADY BUFFS
Sasha Watson heated up after early struggles and finished with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists. Sydney Walton came off the bench with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. West Texas A&M settled down and shot 50+ percent from the field in the final three periods after putting just five points on the scoreboard in the first.
 
NEXT UP
The Javelinas return to the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court for three games, beginning with a Thursday bout versus #RV Eastern New Mexico University at 5:15 p.m.
