Seventh Inning Surge Lifts Softball Over Pioneers

Javelinas split Friday’s doubleheader

DENTON, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (18-25, 7-15 LSC) stole a game at Pioneer Field in game two of Friday's doubleheader against Texas Woman's University (26-16, 14-8, LSC). The Pioneers took game one 10-2 and then the Blue and Gold responded with a 6-5 rally in game two.

Rachael Longoria went 5-for-6 at the plate, improving her hitting streak to four games and increasing her number of multiple hit games to 13. Victoria Schoonard-Saborio finished Friday's doubleheader 4-for-6 at the dish.

Lindsey Angelico batted .500 and Haley Boyett batted .400 and have reached base safely in 11 consecutive games.

Game One
Schoonard-Saborio (2-for-3) hit her fifth home run of the season in game one of Friday's doubleheader 10-2 loss to Texas Woman's in five innings.

Longoria and Angelico went 2-for-2 at the plate and Lauren Oatman extended her reached base safely streak to 20 games with a double to left center field.

Carlie Clark (8-9) was charged with the loss after pitching her fifth complete game of the season and Tori Bice improved to 15-9 in 2016.

The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after one run in the first inning, three runs in the second inning, and five runs in the third.

In the top of the fourth inning, Schoonard-Saborio hit a solo shot to left center field to put the Javelinas on the board.

After matching the Javs with one run in the bottom of the fourth, Oatman's double to left center field plated Boyett who reached on a fielder's choice. Schoonard-Saborio then singled, advancing Oatman to third with two outs but the chance to extend the game fell short after a pop fly to right field.

Game Two
Longoria went 3-for-4 in the batter's box in game two of Friday's doubleheader recording her 13th multiple hit game and was responsible for driving home the lead changing run in the seventh inning.

Boyett and Schoonard-Saborio went 2-for-3 at the plate while Roxy Chapa, Corinne Brassell, Alexei Gonzalez, and Myrissa Sanchez each picked up one hit.

Sarah Gilbert (4-5) had an outstanding performannce on the rubber and tossing all 7.0 innings recording 4 punchouts. Hailey Dixon is credited the loss after giving up six earned runs in 6.1 innings pitched. Hickey relieved Dixon of pitching duties for 0.2 innings.

The Javelinas struck first in the opening frame after back-to-back singles by Boyett and Schoonard-Saborio. Schoonard-Saborio received the RBI on her single when Boyett crossed the dish after advancing to second and third due to a passed ball and wild pitch, respectively.

The Pioneers responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead that remained until the seventh inning.

Kingsville erupted in the seventh inning with five runs on four hits. Boyett got things started with her first triple of the year making her the tying run, and soon after, the lead changing run was on first base after Schoonard-Saborio walked. Katie Hickey threw a costly wild pitch and Boyett stole home to tie the ballgame 2-2 while Schoonard-Saborio advanced to second. Hickey walked Chapa, and threw another wild pitch that advanced the two runners to second and third base. Three consecutive hits by Longoria, Brassell, and Gonzalez plated four runs, highlighted by the latter by Gonzalez that was a double driving in three runs to take a controlling 6-2 lead.

The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom frame but was not enough to overcome the Javelinas rally as they went on to steal the  second game of Friday's doubleheader.

TAMUK and TWU will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 and 3 p.m.
