Softball Showcase Power in Season Finale

The Javelinas conclude day two with three home runs in game two’s 10-1 victory over Midwestern State



WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Softball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (22-33, 11-21 LSC) blasted three home runs in a 10-1 victory in the 2016 season finale as the Javelinas split Saturday's doubleheader at Mustangs Park 9-2 and 10-1 with Midwestern State University (29-27, 14-18 LSC).

The 2016 campaign is the first 20-plus win season since 2011 and the first 10-plus Lone Star Conference wins since 2007.
 
In the four-game series against Midwestern, Roxy Chapa went 6-for-13 with three RBI, ending the season with an 11-game hitting streak and 13-game reached base safely streak. She also set the single season RBI record and finished third in the home runs department with 10. Rachael Longoria tallied six hits, six runs, a home run and three RBI. Victoria Schoonard-Saborio went 5-for-9 at the dish with a a home run and five RBI. Alexei Gonzalez (.364) and Haley Boyett (.357) both contributed with one dinger.
 
Game One
Longoria (2-for-4) notched her 15th multi-hit game of the season but Midwestern State took Saturday's opener 9-2. Chapa added a base knock and ribbie, extending her hit streak to 10. Schoonard-Saborio, Alexei Gonzalez and Karri Smith each added a hit.
 
Michaela Huebotter (1-5) took the loss after going 2.2 innings. Smith struck out three in 3.1 innings out of the 'pen. Erin Knox tossed a complete game for the Mustangs with six punchouts for the W.
 
The Mustangs jumped out to a 7-0 lead after scoring three runs in the first and two in both the third and fourth innings.
 
TAMUK got on the board after Chapa's double in the top of the sixth inning, which plated Longoria, who reached on a single. Gonzalez followed suit by singling out to right field to bring in Chapa, who came around to score on the fielding error. In the bottom frame, MSU scored two runs to take game one 9-2.
  
Game Two
TAMUK dominated the entire second game of Saturday's doubleheader, capping off the 2016 season with a five-inning 10-1 win over MSU.
 
Game two featured three home runs off the bats of Longoria, Schoonard-Saborio and Boyett.
 
Boyett went 3-for-3 with four runs in the win, while Schoonard-Saborio added two hits and four RBI and Lonoria and Gonzalez also collected two hits.
 
The Javelinas drew first blood with a run on three hits in the leadoff frame. The run scored on Chapa's 55th RBI of the season.
 
Lindsey Angelico and Boyett reached on a single and throwing error, respectively, before Schoonard-Saborio singled up the middle to plate Angelico for a 2-0 lead in the second. With Schoonard-Saborio and Boyett on the bags, Longoria stepped in the box and sent a three-run shot to left field to give Kingsville a 4-0 lead.
 
In the third inning, Schoonard-Saborio hit the second three-run bomb of the game and gave the Javelinas a commanding 8-0 lead. Another run came in to extend the lead to 9-0.
 
Boyett went yard in the top of the fifth to give TAMUK a 10-0 edge before the 'Stangs scored a run in the bottom frame. The run-rule victory capped off the season for Texas A&M-Kingsville.
 
In the 2016 season, Chapa and Longoria led the club with batting averages of .345. Chapa garnered LSC Hitter of the Week honors this week and finished her freshman season with 10 home runs and 55 RBI. Longoria added five home runs and 17 multi-hit games. Freshman Schoonard-Saborio hit .344 with eight home runs and Boyett added a .312 batting average with two home runs, 45 runs and 21 stolen bases. All four are expected to return to the Hogs next season for their sophomore (Chapa and Schoonard-Saborio) and junior (Boyett and Longoria) campaigns. Starters Gonzalez, Myrissa Sanchez, Angelico and Lauren Oatman and pitchers Carlie Clark and Sarah Gilbert are also expected to return.
