KINGSVILLE, Texas (Baseball) – The defending Lone Star Conference champions made a bold statement in its quest for a three-peat as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (8-3, 1-0 LSC) upset No. 10/24 Cameron University (11-1, 0-1 LSC), 9-0, Friday evening at Nolan Ryan Field.
Â
The Javelinas rode the arm of
Sebi Palacios, who punched out 13 in 8.0 shutout innings. The right-hander improved to 2-1 on the year and now has two double digit strikeout performances on the bump. Offensively, every starter reached base safely, led by
Dalton Perry's 3-for-4 night from the plate as the reigning LSC Hitter of the Week finished with three runs scored, two RBI and a home run, his third of the season.
Hayden Vesely legged out his fourth triple on the year and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Pablo Hernandez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and
Ruben Almaguer concluded his first LSC game 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Â
The balanced attack featured nine runs on 13 hits and combined with the dominating performance on the hill, the Javelinas increased their win streak to eight games, seven consecutive versus the Aggies and nine straight against CU in the friendly confines at Nolan Ryan Field.
Â
A one out single by Perry in the third got the offense rolling for the Hogs as the senior outfielder came around to score when the next man stepped up to the plate as Vesely's triple plated the designated hitter to give TAMUK a 1-0 lead. Following suit, Vesely scored on Almaguer's double as the third inning ended with the Javelinas up 2-0.
Â
In the fifth, Perry blasted a solo shot with one out to extend Kingsville's lead to three and the big inning came in the sixth as Texas A&M-Kingsville exploded for six runs for a 9-0 lead. Hernandez led off the inning with a single and scored on
Jimmy Roche's infield single.
Brayton Carlson singled to left, Perry singled up the middle and two batters later, Almaguer doubled down the line to plate two to make it an 8-0 ballgame. Batting around, Hernandez came up again in the frame and singled through the left side to plate the sixth run of the inning.
Â
Bryan Belote (2-1) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs in 5.2 innings.
Â
The series continues with a double dip tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
