PORTALES, N.M. (Baseball) – Christian Caudle went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI and
Miles Holcomb and
Zach Smith each collected two RBI and two hits in #RV/30 Texas A&M University-Kingsville's (16-7, 8-4 LSC) 12-11 10-inning setback to Eastern New Mexico University (9-17, 2-10 LSC) in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Greyhound Field.
Caudle reached base safely in all six plate appearances, tallying six total bases, Holcomb was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Smith went 2-for-4 at the dish with two RBI and
Hayden Vesely was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Ruben Almaguer was 2-for-6 with an RBI and
Hunter Perkins scored three runs in the extra-inning affair.
Vesely started the game on the bump for the Hogs and went 1.1 innings in the no-decision.
Lance Elling (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in 1.2 innings. Scott Klein (2-1) earned the victory for Eastern New Mexico after the Cleveland, Ohio native tosses a scoreless top of the 10
th frame.
The Javelinas struck first with a run in the second on
Wesley Aguilar's fielder's choice. An inning later, Texas A&M-Kingsville tacked on two more runs to its lead on Caudle's two-run single that plated Almaguer and
Jimmy Roche, who led off the inning with a walk and base hit, respectively.
The Greyhounds took a 5-3 lead in the bottom inning after plating five in the stanza on five hits and an error.
Continuing to score, as they did in every inning from the second to the eighth, the Javelinas responded with three runs in the fifth to regain a one-run lead. Perkins' single brought in Vesely, who walked with one out, and Holcomb drove in two on a two-out base knock.
The lead grew in the fifth after Vesely, who reached on an infield single, came around to score on Almaguer's double. In the sixth, Smith drove in two on a single to extend TAMUK's lead to 9-5. A wild pitch in the seventh gave Kingsville a five-run cushion that ENMU began chipping away at in the seventh with two runs.
Smith began the eighth with a walk and stole second to put himself in scoring position. Vesely followed with an RBI single, but the Greyhounds forced extras in the ninth with four runs.
Eastern New Mexico scored in the 10
th to take the final game of the first series, 12-11.
The Javelinas head to Laredo, Texas to take on Texas A&M International University Tuesday.
