KINGSVILLE, Texas (Softball) – They started slow but the Javelina offense exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning of game one and blasted three home runs in a 10-2 run-rule victory in game two as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (6-3) swept Tuesday's doubleheader at Vernie and Blanche Hubert Field, 9-3 and 10-2, over Huston-Tillotson College (1-3).
Â
Roxy Chapa finished the day with eight RBI and four hits.
Â
The Javelinas have now won six of their last seven games and are 5-0 when scoring six or more runs.
Â
Game OneA sloppy game defensively for Texas A&M-Kingsville was offset by a nine run sixth as the Hogs, who trailed 3-0, as every regular reached base safely. Chapa went 2-for-3 with four RBI from the cleanup spot,
Sarah Gilbert finished with two RBI and a double and
Lindsey Angelico and
Delila Gillespie each swiped a bag.
Â
Gilbert improved to 3-1 on the year with 3.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in relief of
Karri Smith, who went 4.0 innings. Crystal Castillo (1-2) was hit with the loss.
Â
The Rams scored three runs in the fourth but the Hogs struck back in the sixth with seven hits.
Victoria Schoonard-Saborio and Angelico led off the inning with a single and hit by pitch, followed by Chapa's RBI single,
Myrissa Sanchez's bunt single that loaded the bases and
Rachael Longoria's RBI single. Gilbert's double down the line gave the Hogs a 4-3 lead that was capped off by Chapa's bases clearing double to end the frame with nine runs.
Â
Game TwoThe offense continued and got off to a quick start with a six-run first behind starter
Michaela Huebotter. Chapa went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI, all coming on the grand slam in the first. Walks to
Haley Boyett and Schoonard-Saborio, sandwiched by Angelico's infield single loaded the bases for the freshman catcher and Chapa destroyed a ball to left field to give the Hogs a 4-1 lead after the Rams scored a run in the top half of the inning.
Â
The second inning began with a solo shot off the bat of Schoonard-Saborio and after a double by Chapa and single by Smith, Longoria hit a bomb to left center field to make it a 10-1 ballgame.
Â
Longoria finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored and Huebotter (1-0) picked up a win in her first appearance in the circle after tossing 5.0 innings of two-run ball (one run was earned). The Hogs tagged Samantha Arciba (0-1) for 10 runs in 1.0 inning and took the second game 10-2.
Â
No days off, the Javelinas head to Austin to battle St. Edward's University tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
Â
