KINGSVILLE, Texas (Football) – Talk about making the most of your drives. Despite trailing heading into the second half, Texas A&M University-Kingsville (7-3, 5-3 LSC) scored on three of its four drives in the final 30 minutes en route to its fifth consecutive Lone Star Conference victory, 28-13, over Western New Mexico University (3-7, 3-5 LSC) on Senior Night Saturday evening at Javelina Stadium.
The victory marked the most wins in a single season since 2010 and the longest win streak since 2010.
Myles Carr tossed three touchdowns in the victory, two to
Stehly Reden. The duo set new single season program marks in passing touchdowns and touchdowns by a tight end with 26 and seven, respectively. The previous passing touchdown mark was 24 by
Abel Gonzalez back in 2001. Carr finished 16-of-24 with 307 yards and Reden's two receptions for 74 yards were scores.
Luis Lopez continued his torrid pace with 108 rushing yards and a score on 16 carries and three catches for 91 yards.
Anthony Autry added seven catches for 96 yards and a touchdown, all in the second half. Senior
Greg Pitre rushed for 76 yards.
Trevor Moses led the Hogs with eight tackles and
Braedon Robinson followed with seven stops and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Quentin Parks had 3.0 of his six tackles in the backfield and
Joe Crowe finished with 2.0. The duo also forced fumbles in their final home games of the season. After the first quarter, the Javelina defense allowed just three points.
"I was disappointed with our offensive performance in the first half but we came out and executed in the second," said head coach
Daren Wilkinson. "We only had four drives in the second half and scored on three of them and kneeled on the fourth. Our defense played well."
First Quarter
Nick Pelrean began the game with a 60 yard kickoff return to bring the Hogs into WNMU territory, but the Javelinas fumbled on their opening drive, leading to the Mustangs' first offensive drive.
WNMU scored on three plays to take a 7-0 lead with 13:20 remaining.
Minutes later, Tyler Vargas extended the Mustangs lead to 10 with a 31 yard field goal at the 4:51 mark. After a penalty on what appeared to be an onside kick attempt, the Javelinas scored on a 54 yard touchdown connection between Carr and Reden. The TD was Carr's 24
th passing touchdown, tying the single season school record and the reception was Reden's sixth score of the season. On the play,
Jordan Thomas made a great block downfield to create room for Reden.
Pitre rushed for 23 yards towards the end of the first but an interception gave possession back to the Mustangs.
Second Quarter
Western New Mexico marched down the field but ended the drive empty handed as a field goal was blocked by Robinson at the 13:03 mark.
The Javelinas threatened after a 37 reception by Lopez but the drive ended on a pick.
In the closing seconds of the first half, Western New Mexico elected to attempt one last pass from the TAMUK4 and the pass was incomplete with the half ending 10-7 in favor of the Mustangs.
Carr was 4-of-11 in the first half and seniors Parks and Amushie led the Hogs with five tackles apiece along with
Josh Wilson.
Third Quarter
Alex Kuyinu made his final home game a memorable one with a forced fumble early in the third and fellow senior Crowe followed a couple of plays later with a forced fumble of his own.
A Javelina fumble on special teams gave WNMU great field positioning and despite another sack by Parks, the Mustangs added a field goal for a 13-7 cushion at the 9:18 mark.
Autry, who was quiet in the first half, had five catches for 57 yards in the third quarter. On the 11
th play of the drive, Lopez found the end zone with his seventh rushing TD of the season. The PAT by
Julio De la Garza gave the Javelinas their first lead of the game, 14-13, with 3:42 remaining in the third.
Fourth Quarter
On its ensuing drive, A&M-Kingsville had two big plays; a 37 yard reception by Lopez and a 30 yard touchdown catch by Autry to extend the lead to 21-13 with 11:38 left to play.
Kingsville made it a two touchdown ballgame with Reden's second touchdown from Carr with 2:25 remaining. The Javelinas drove the entire length of the field after a punt pinned them on the 1.
In the second half, the Javelinas were 3-for-3 on third down conversions and scored on three of their four drives. The fourth drive was when they kneeled to clinch the victory.
Next up is the regular season finale at Oklahoma Panhandle State University Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.
