KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – The Javelinas continued to pound the ball inside and outscored the Dustdevils 28-to-8 in the paint to improve to 3-1 on the year as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (3-1) defeated Texas A&M International University (0-5), 60-46, Tuesday evening at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Kaylin Roher finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
Meesha Wade added 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds and
Kaylee Kana pulled down seven of her nine boards on the offensive glass.
First Period
Texas A&M-Kingsville held a 15-12 lead through the game's opening 10 minutes. Wade and
Angelica Wilson led the Hogs with four points apiece and the team pulled down six offensive rebounds.
Second Period
Roher displayed quick hands and ended the first half with six steals to go with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting. However, the Javelinas were just 5-of-20 from the field in the second period and went into the break tied at 29. Kana had five rebounds, all on the offensive glass.
Third Period
After trading points, the Javelinas took a 36-34 lead with 5:30 remaining on
Shaq Debose's steal and fast break layup. The defense forced back-to-back turnovers and
Tee Moore's corner triple extended the lead to five with 5:09 left to play. Wilson proved to be a presence down low, swatting away a second chance opportunity as Texas A&M-Kingsville kept the Dustdevils scoreless for the final 6:20 of the period to go into the final stanza of regulation with a 45-34 lead.
Fourth Period
Texas A&M International was held scoreless until the 7:26 mark in the fourth as the Javelina lead increased to 14 in a 14-0 run. All in all, the run was 19-1 until 5:25 left to play. Overall, the Javelina lead was too much to overcome as the Hogs upended the Dustdevils 60-46.
Hannah Beede led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds for TAMIU, while Rosebrooke Hunt added 11 boards.
Next Up
The Javelinas will take Thanksgiving off before tipping off Lone Star Conference play at nationally-ranked Angelo State University next Tuesday, followed by a home slate versus Texas Woman's University Dec. 1.
