KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – Outscoring the Tigers 26-2 in the paint, Texas A&M University-Kingvsille (1-0) held East Central University (0-1) to 16.7 percent shooting in the 59-35 season opening victory Friday afternoon at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Head coach
Wade Scott said he would count on veteran leadership and he did just that, starting four returners and center
Jaiton Walls, who made her Javelina debut to the tune of eight points and five rebounds. Senior
Kaylin Roher, who led the Hogs in scoring last season, carried the load offensively, finishing with a game-high 15 points on 3-of-7 shooting from three-point range. The guard added four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Kaylee Kana registered seven points and eight rebounds,
Meesha Wade finished with seven points, six boards, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot and
Joslyn Smith pulled down six rebounds off the bench.
A&M-Kingsville dominated in transition as well, scoring 13 fast break points to ECU's zero.
First Period
A quick start to the game featured the Hogs jump out to a 19-4 lead with 2:33 left to play. The Javelinas went on a 9-0 run during the early lead and ended the opening quarter of the season with a 21-10 lead. Efficiency was key as the Hogs scored 14 points in the paint and seven off Tiger turnovers, shooting 53.3 percent from the field in the period. At the charity stripe, A&M-Kingsville went 5-of-6.
Second Period
Despite struggling from the field in the second, the Javelinas extended their lead to 29-15. In the first half, Walls posted eight points and five rebounds and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Third Period
Roher heated up out of locker room, draining two triples en route to an eight point period to continue to extend the Texas A&M-Kingsville cushion. Through the first thirty minutes of action, the Javelinas led by 22, 45-23.
Fourth Period
The Blue and Gold put the closing stamp on its second consecutive season opening win and as the clock hit 0:00, the Javelinas found themselves 1-0 with a 59-35 victory over the Great American Conference program East Central.
For the Tigers, Jalyn Jackson and Alexa Adair scored seven points apiece.
