SAN ANGELO, Texas (Women's Basketball) – Kaylee Kana was a point shy of her first career double-double, finishing with nine points, a career-high 11 rebounds and two blocked shots in Texas A&M University-Kingsville's (5-13, 0-8 LSC) 81-61 loss to Angelo State University (13-5, 6-2 LSC) Saturday afternoon in Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
Kana's previous season-high was eight rebounds, a mark she reached twice and seven of her nine points came from the foul line. She finished 7-8 from the charity stripe, also a season best. Starters
Kaylin Roher,
Jamesha Wade and
Kyra Bauer finished in double figures with 16 points, 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Roher went 6-17 from the field and connected on two triples. The junior added two assists and a steal. Wade drained five field goals for 11 points and recorded four rebounds, a team-high four assists and a steal and Bauer posted a line of 10 points, five boards and two steals.
The Javelinas forced 13 ASU turnovers to their 10 but the Rambelle bench outscored TAMUK's second unit, 31-10 and the offensive was credited with 20 assists on 27 made field goals.
Kana went into the half with eight rebounds and the Javelinas regrouped from trailing by double digits, ending the half on the wrong end of a 34-27 ballgame. She scored seven points in the third period – all from the free throw line but Texas A&M-Kingsville went into the final quarter of regulation trailing 58-46.
Roher scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the second half. Despite carrying the load offensively, the Javelinas fell to Angelo State, 81-61, in the first of two regular season matchups. The regular season concludes with the Belles visiting Kingsville on Feb. 27.
Five Angelo State players reached double figures, led by KeAnna Kelly's 17 points on 4-6 shooting from three-point range. Taylor Dorsey posted a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Javelinas begin the second half of Lone Star Conference play at Eastern New Mexico University on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
