KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – A one possession game with 25 seconds remaining, Texas A&M University-Kingsville went to the charity stripe looking to knot it up at 65. A Lone Star Conference matchup Saturday ultimately went to the visiting Cameron University Aggies (10-6, 4-3 LSC) as the Javelinas (5-12, 0-7 LSC) dropped a close one, 67-62, at the Gil E. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Jamesha Wade finished with 14 points, six steals, five rebounds, three assists and a block,
Kaylin Roher added a team-high 16 points to go with her two assists and two steals and
Kyra Bauer recorded 12 points on 5-8 shooting off the bench. Leading the way with eight rebounds was
Joslyn Smith, whose five offensive boards came two days after eight o-rebounds.
The Javelinas trailed 21-18 through the opening period and the defense slowed the Cameron up-tempo attack in the second behind Wade's four steals in the first 15 minutes of action. Through 1.5 quarters, Smith gave the Hogs several second chance opportunities with five of her seven rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Kingsville came back to tie the contest at 45 with 5:45 remaining in the third, but back-to-back three-pointers by the Aggies gave CU a six-point lead. The Javelinas cut their deficit to four with 3:31 left on Wade's free throws and after her sixth steal of the evening, Wade hit one more free throw, making it a three-point game with 3:16 remaining.
Lily Hospers took advantage of a Cameron turnover to convert a three-point play as Texas A&M-Kingsville trailed by one at the 2:25 mark of the third period.
Through three, Wade had 14 points on 4-7 shooting and added six steals. The Javelinas went into the final period of regulation trailing 58-53.
A Roher three-pointer with 9:46 remaining in the game made it a two-point game and later in the frame, Hospers' free throw at the 3:20 mark gave the Javelinas an opportunity to tie the game on a jumper.
The win by Cameron improves the Aggies LSC record to 4-3. CU was led by Brandi Leal's 21 points on 6-7 shooting as the guard connected four triples. DJ Vallier came off the bench to lead all players with 14 rebounds.
The Javelinas take the week off before closing out the first half of LSC play at Angelo State University. The Rams upset then top-ranked West Texas A&M University earlier this season.
