WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Women's Basketball) – Jamesha Wade finished with four steals and
Treka Franklin came off the bench to dish out four assists in Texas A&M University-Kingsville's (5-10, 0-5 LSC) 55-44 setback at Midwestern State University (4-12, 3-3 LSC) Wednesday evening at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs are now .500 in Lone Star Conference play while the Javelinas dropped to 0-5. Franklin added three rebounds and two steals,
Joslyn Smith finished with four points, six rebounds and three steals and
Ashley Viera and
Kaylin Roher combined for four triples and 21 points.
Midwestern State held a 12-7 lead through the opening period but the Javelinas stormed back from as much as a nine-point deficit to take a two-point lead at the 7:29 mark in the second on Roher's three-pointer. The 13-2 started with Viera's four-point play in the final stages of the first and was followed by triples by Roher (9:39 in second), Viera (7:48 in second) and Roher again. MSU was able to string together a run of its own to head into the half with a 28-21 lead. Roher scored nine points in the first and added two rebounds and two assists.
The Hogs cut it to five early one in the second half but the Mustangs scored 13 unanswered points to take a 19-point lead with 3:01 remaining in the third period. After three, TAMUK trailed 49-29.
Kingsville outscored MSU 15-6 in the fourth but the run was a little too late as the Javelinas fell to the Mustangs, 55-45.
The Javelinas continue its three games in four days tomorrow, taking on #RV Texas Woman's University (15-3, 5-1 LSC) at 7 p.m. at the Kitty Magee Arena.
Scouting the PioneersCurrently receiving votes in the D2 Media Poll courtesy of D2SIDA, Texas Woman's is 15-3 overall and 5-1 in LSC play. The lone loss came at the hands of then No. 1 West Texas A&M, but the Pioneers have since rebounded, taking back-to-back matchups versus A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State.
TWU is 9-3 inside Kitty Magee Arena, and the Pioneers took both matchups against the Hogs last season. Erin Maxwell leads the club with 12.6 points and 8.8 rebounds and 3.44 blocks per game, second most in Division II. Her 62 total blocks are the most in the nation.
As a team, the Pioneers lead the conference in blocked shots per game at 5.89 and the defense is one of the best in the country, limiting opponents to 31.8 field goal percentage, second best mark in DII and 21.5 percent from behind-the-arc, topping the charts.
