KINGSVILLE, Texas – Ashley Bukowski and
Brett Zaccardo set career-highs in kills and digs, respectively, Saturday morning during the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team's setback to Our Lady of the Lake in five sets (15-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 20-18) in the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. Bukowski finished with a match-high 22 kills and Zaccardo produced 31 digs.
With the loss, the Javelinas fall to 5-5 on the season while the Saints are now 10-1 overall.
Krystal Faison,
Casey Klobedans and Bukowski all finished with double-doubles. Bukowski added 14 digs to her kill total and Faison finished with 13 kills and 16 digs. Klobedans totaled a season-high 56 assists and 11 digs while just missing a triple-double by one kill.
Also with double figure kills were
Haley Hutchinson (10) and
Valarie Moehrig (13).
The Javelinas jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set behind two kills from
Haley Hutchinson and a service ace apiece courtesy of
Kadeja Scott and
Abbey Wells. OLLU was able to cut their deficit to three in the middle of the set but TAMUK used a 9-2 run to end the set.
In the second, the Blue and Gold were able to take a 14-10 advantage following a combined block by Bukowksi and Hutchinson. However, the Saints fought back to go in front 18-17. The teams traded points until the visitors were able take the lead for good at 22-20 following a three-point burst.
Set three was all OLLU in the beginning and eventually went up 17-10 after a TAMUK attack error. A kill by Bukowski started a 10-3 run for the Javelinas to put them ahead by one. After the visitors won the next two points, the Blue and Gold closed the set by taking four of the final five points that was capped off with a powerful strike from Faison.
The squads played each other close in the fourth set until the Saints went on a 13-4 run to reach set point at 24-16. The Hogs staved off heading to a decisive fifth set by taking the next four points with two coming on kills by Klobedans. However, OLLU finally managed to get a kill to go one more game.
Bukowski recorded her final kill of the match to put the Blue and Gold within a point of winning the set. The visitors responded with a kill of their own to knot the score 14-14. The teams followed by trading points until the Saints managed to win three of the final four points for the 20-18 set victory.
Next up for TAMUK is a Lone Star Conference match against Midwestern State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
