Moehrig Leads @JavelinaVB with 10 Kills in Setback to Drury

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Junior outside hitter Valarie Moehrig had 10 kills to pace the Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team Saturday morning against Drury in the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Volleyball Invitational in Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. The Panthers swept the contest by the scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-17.

The Javelinas drop to 4-3 on the season while DU is now 6-1.

Casey Klobedans recorded her third double-double of the year with 27 assists and 16 digs. Falling just short of her fourth consecutive double-double with nine kills and digs was Krystal Faison. Libero Brett Zaccardo finished with 16 digs to share the Blue and Gold lead with Klobedans.

The teams kept the first set close thru the early portion of the game. A kill by Haley Hutchinson gave TAMUK a 9-8 advantage, their last of the set. The Panthers responded with a 12-2 run to take the game easily.

Moehrig posted two kills and Ashley Bukowski and Hutchinson had a successful attack each to put the Hoggies up 5-1 early in set two. Drury fought back to knot the score at 9-9.

The teams traded the next six points until the Panthers won two straight. TAMUK would not be able to regain the lead again the rest of the game with the closest deficit being one twice, the last being 15-14 after a Faison kill.

Set three again saw the Hoggies jump out to an early 5-2 advantage. They were able to stay in front until DU went on a 10-0 run to go up 18-10. Consecutive successful attacks from Bukowski and Faison cut the Javelinas deficit to four late but the Panthers won the final four points to end the contest.

The Blue and Gold conclude their home tournament on with a 2:30 p.m. contest against Lubbock Christian.
