Weaver Scores 17 as @TAMUKWBB Falls Short to Zias 57-53

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Micah Weaver scored a game-high 17 points but the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-19, 0-9 LSC) fell short to Eastern New Mexico (7-12, 3-6 LSC) 57-53 Wednesday night at Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

After a layup by the Zias for the first basket of the game at the 18:21 mark, Weaver nailed a jumper nearly a minute later to tie the game. A 15-3 spurt from ENMU gave them a double-digit advantage.

Ruby Robertson scored the first seven points of a Javelinas' 13-0 run over the final 7:38 of the first half, cutting their deficit to three

The Blue and Gold extended their scoring streak to 15 straight points when Weaver hit a jumper on the opening possession of the second half. Jaylyn Cooper ended Eastern's scoring drought of 9:33 with a three-pointer with nearly a minute and half taken off the clock.

Weaver made two fastbreak layups that knotted the score at 31-31. Both teams traded points until the Zias hit a trey from the left wing.

Two made shot from the charity stripe by Michelle Wagner and one from Ope Ibrahim tied the game again, this time at 38-38. Weaver then converted two free throws to put TAMK ahead by one but ENMU responded with three straight made charity stripe attempts to take the lead back.

Three free throws were converted courtesy of Ashley Viera in less than a minute to tie the score (45-45) again. Eastern stormed back with a 6-0 spurt but a layup from Viera and a Weaver jumper cut the Zias' advantage to two with a minute to play.

After Cooper made two charity stripe shots, Wagner nailed a jumper from the free throw line to keep the Javelinas within two.

Eastern then threw the ball away at midcourt to give the ball back with 26.6 seconds left on the clock. Wagner missed a jumper on the next possession and was forced to foul. Cassidy Doherty sealed the contest with two free throws.

Weaver was 7-for-14 from the field and 3-of-5 at the charity stripe while grabbing three rebounds and recording two steals. Lauren Jay posted an eight-point, seven-rebound performance.

Robertson tallied nine points and two assists while Viera dished out a team-high three assists. Alexis Copeland, Tessa Ramirez and Weaver all finished with two steals.

Next up for the Blue and Gold is a trip to nationally-ranked West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
