WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Lauren Jay recorded her first double-double of the season and second in her career with 20 points and 11 rebounds. However, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-25, 0-15 LSC) fell 78-63 at No. 24/17 Midwestern State (20-5, 11-4 LSC) Saturday afternoon in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Scoring the first six points of the game was
Micah Weaver. She added a jumper at the 17:37 mark for her eighth straight point for the Blue and Gold.
TAMUK stretched their lead to 12, 22-10, with 11:22 left until halftime on a three-pointer by
Alexis Copeland. It was the largest advantage the Javelinas have had in a game this season and only the second time they have been up by double-figures.
A 27-9 run followed from the Mustangs to take the lead for good and go into the break leading 37-31.
Twice the Blue and Gold were able to cut their deficit to four within the first 91 seconds of the second period, both on layups courtesy of Jay. MSU would not allow them to get any closer the rest of the way.
For Jay, her scoring output matched her career-high while her rebounding total was one short of tying her career best she set earlier this season against St. Mary's. Weaver also reached double-digits with 14 points while adding six rebounds, three steals, two assists and the squad's lone block.
Copeland added nine points while
Kyra Bauer was credited with two steals.
Even though the Mustangs outshot TAMUK from the field and on treys, the Javelinas went 18-for-23 (78.3 percent) at the free throw line while MSU was only 10-of-21 (47.6 percent).
The final game of the season for the Blue and Gold takes place next Saturday at Angelo State.
