@TAMUKWBB Falls Short at Angelo State, Completes Historic Season

Season is now complete for the Javelinas

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Three players for Texas A&M-Kingsville (0-26, 0-16 LSC) scored in double-figures but fell short to Angelo State (9-17, 4-12 LSC) 63-56 Saturday afternoon in the Junell Center. Micah Weaver led the Javelinas with 12 points while Lauren Jay and Michelle Wagner added 11 and 10, respectively.

The Blue and Gold completed a historic season as they became just the third team in the history of the Lone Star Conference to not come away with a victory and first since the 1995-96 campaign (Angelo State). TAMUK also set a school record for losses in a season.

The Rambelles began the game by scoring five consecutive points. At the 16:05 mark, Weaver nailed a jumper from the left wing for the Javelinas' first basket.

Four straight by ASU increased their lead to seven until Kyra Bauer made 1-of-2 at the free throw line coming out of the under-12 media timeout. Jay followed with two made shots at the charity stripe the next time down the court to cut the deficit to 9-5.

TAMUK went on an 8-2 run to pull to within five after trailing 18-9. The scoring streak was capped off by a three-pointer courtesy of Wagner.

A trey with 65 seconds to go in the half stretched the Rambelles lead to 14. Weaver though nailed the last bucket of the period with two second left to cut the halftime deficit to 33-21.

Opening the second half, Bauer and Jay were both fouled in the act of shooting on the first two possessions. They went a combined 4-for-4 from the line. Weaver nailed a jumper from the right wing to pull the Javelinas to within single digits nearly three minutes in.

The Belles scored four quick points to take a 12-point advantage. Weaver nailed a jumper to start a 7-0 run for the Blue and Gold.

Six straight points then went for ASU to increase their lead to 11. The next time down the court, Bauer converted an old-fashion three-point play to being a 9-2 run.

A layup by the Rambelles ended the scoring streak for a few seconds. Ashley Viera and Jay then nailed back-to-back threes to tie the game 49-49 with 6:10 to go in the contest.

Shauna Taylor of ASU made a shot from long range. TAMUK kept fighting and Alexis Copeland nailed a jumper that rolled around the rim twice before dropping to give them their first lead of the contest 55-54.

The advantage held for 23 second until the Rambelles converted a layup and made the follow-up free throw to go up by two with three minutes to play. The ball would not find its home for the Javelinas until Ope Ibrahim hit a free throw with 19.6 showing on the clock, thus allowing ASU to score nine of the final 10 points in the game.

Bauer led TAMUK with seven rebounds while Ibrahim grabbed six coming off the bench. Viera dished out a game-high four assists and did not commit a turnover. Both Tessa Ramirez and Bauer recorded three steals apiece as well.

The Blue and Gold made 34.0 percent from the field. From long range, they went 5-for-13 (38.5 percent) including making all four of their attempts in the second half.
