DURANT, Okla. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team battled but dropped both games in the second day of the Southeastern Regional Invitational at the Durant Multi-Sport Complex. The Javelinas fell 7-3 to Washburn (3-3) in the first game of the day and then lost to No. 16 St. Mary's (10-0) 5-3.
Loren Donaldson paced the Blue and Gold at the plate with four hits and two RBI. Both
Jaeleen Castro and
Karri Smith recorded two base knocks apiece.
Taking the setbacks in the circle were
Bella Rosas (0-2) and Smith (2-2).
Game 1 - WashburnTAMUK struck first in the second with two runs.
Stephanie Lugo drove in one when she reached base on a fielder's choice. The second run was plated when
Ariel Kellogg laced the ball to left field for a single.
The Ichabods recorded four hits in a row, including three straight doubles, as the scored four times in the third.
In the next half inning, Lugo roped a double to center field. She then swiped third to move within 60 feet of scoring.
Kellogg followed by drawing a walk to put runners on the corners. On a double steal attempt, she was thrown out at second but Lugo crossed the plate to cut the Javelinas' deficit to 4-3.
WU sealed their victory with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as they posted four hits and were helped out by an error.
Donaldson had two hits while seven other had one apiece. Along with Lugo, both
Carlie Clark and
Valerie Ramirez hit a double.
Rosas started for TAMUK and had a game-high three strikeouts. However, she lasted only 2.2 innings after surrendering four runs on six hits.
Shyenne Hicks tossed an inning of relief with four hits and three runs credited to her. Smith finished the game with 2.1 shutouts frames.
Game 2 - #16 St. Mary'sLeading off the game,
Haley Boyett hit a single back up the middle. Three batters later the Javelinas had two runners in scoring position. Donaldson then drove a 2-2 offering to center for a double that plated two.
The Rattlers answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. They added two more in the second as TAMUK committed three errors to take the lead.
Donaldson started the fourth off with a base knock up the middle. With two outs, Castro hit a RBI single to cut the score to 4-3.
StMU tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth for the final score of the game.
For the second consecutive game, Donaldson recorded a multi-hit contest.
Smith tossed her fourth complete game of the season in the circle. She struck out six but allowed nine hits, five runs and four walks.
The final day of the tournament sees the Blue and Gold take on Southwestern Oklahoma State at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
