Second Chances for Pioneers Dooms @TAMUKWBB DENTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-21, 0-11 LSC) fell to Texas Woman's (13-10, 6-6 LSC) 55-39 Wednesday night at Kitty Magee Arena as the Pioneers took advantage of 26 offensive rebounds.
After a turnover by TWU on their opening possession,
Micah Weaver nailed a jumper to put the Javelinas up 2-0 less than 30 seconds into the contest.
The Pioneers responded with an 11-0 in 4:26 to take the lead for good.
Six straight for the Blue and Gold cut their deficit to three halfway through the first half. The run was capped off by two free throws by
Ope Ibrahim.
Over the final two minutes, TWU scored four of the last six points to take a 24-16 advantage into intermission.
TAMUK came out of the break and held the home squad to only six points in the first 5:10 while scoring nine to cut their deficit to three. That was as close as the Javelinas would get the rest of the contest as they made just 3-of-13 from the field over the final 14 minutes.
Lauren Jay posted a team best nine points and six rebounds.
Ashley Viera added seven points, all from the charity stripe, with three assists. Getting credited with three steals was Weaver.
The 39 points are the lowest by TAMUK since putting up 37 at West Texas A&M on January 28, 2012.
Next up for the Blue and Gold is Texas A&M-Commerce Thursday at 5:30 p.m. on the road.
