AUSTIN, Texas (Men's Basketball) – #RV St. Edward's University (5-1) was able to score 23 points off turnovers and end the three-game win streak of Texas A&M University-Kingsville (5-2) with a 90-73 victory over the Javelinas on Wednesday evening at the Recreation and Convocation Center.
Troy Jones finished with a team-high 17 points after going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe and 3-of-5 from the field. The senior forward added seven rebounds and a steal and
Cris Boleware chipped in 14 points and two steals after going a perfect 3-of-3 from three-point range.
Trey Sumpter came off the bench to score nine points and pull down six rebounds and
JaMarkus Horace recorded three blocked shots.
St. Edward's took an early 9-0 lead and shot lights out in the first half, going 19-of-34 en route to a 53-28 lead at halftime. Jones connected on 7-of-8 free throws in the opening frame to lead all Javelina scorers with nine points and defensively, Horace swatted away two shots off the bench. The Hilltoppers were able to score 22 points in the paint and 14 points off turnovers.
Despite the slow start, the offensive kicked it up a notch in the second half and the Hogs outscored the Hilltoppers, 45-37, in the second half.
Four St. Edward's starters reached double figures, led by Frankie Mgbolu's 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting. John Gramlich and Ramir Burton combined for seven assists, two steals and 30 points.
The Javelinas take 10 days off for finals week, resuming action at Texas A&M International University on Dec. 12 at 3 p.m.
