KINGSVILLE, Texas – Junior
Treka Franklin made a free throw with two seconds left to give the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (3-0) a 67-66 victory over Texas A&M International (0-3) Wednesday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. With the win, the Javelinas are off to their best start since the 2007-08 season.
Both
Kaylin Roher and
Jamesha Wade scored a team-high 15 points and were credited with two steals each. Roher made three three-pointers and dished out a team best three assists. Wade went 4-for-6 from the field and made all six of her three point attempts.
Kaylee Kana added 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting that included going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.
Pacing the Javelinas with four rebounds apiece were
Lily Hospers, TaSheena Moore and Wade.
Joslyn Smith recorded a game-high three steals and Wade had the squad's lone block.
After the Dustdevils made two free throws at the beginning of the game, the Blue and Gold went on a 20-5 run that was capped off by back-to-back treys from
Ashley Viera and Smith to take the lead. TAMUK took their largest advantage of the game at 35-16 following a layup from Wade with 4:45 left in the second quarter.
Down by 14 at the start of the fourth period, TAMIU fought back to tie the game 66-66 when Keiona Mathews made two free throws with just over two seconds left on the clock.
The Dustdevils fouled Franklin on the ensuing inbound pass to send her to the charity stripe. She missed the first attempt but sunk the second to put the Javelinas in front by one. A last second heave for TAMIU was off the mark and allowed the Javelinas to remain undefeated.
Next up for the Blue and Gold is the home opener against St. Mary's on Saturday at 2 p.m.
