KINGSVILLE, Texas - Junior
Marcus Frazier converted a contested layup with 2.1 seconds left in overtime and added a free throw to give the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team (1-0) a 79-77 overtime victory over future Lone Star Conference member Texas-Permian Basin (0-1) Saturday night in Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court. The junior transfer finished with 10 points and a game-high five assists off the bench.
Along with Fraizer, four other Javelinas reached double-figures in points led by
DJ Weathers' 14.
Troy Jones added 13 points and
Trey Sumpter contributed 12.
Jamar Goodwin recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Defensively,
JaMarkus Horace led the Blue and Gold with two rejections. Recording one block apiece were
Elliot Taylor, Goodwin and Sumpter.
Malcolm Hill-Bey scored a game best 22 points on 6-of-11 shooting and going 8-for-9 at the free throw line for the Falcons. Johnnie Lacy contributed 16 points and Gary Akbar tallied 15. Blocking a game-high five shots was Codye Hatcher.
Goodwin nailed his second three-pointer of the game to put TAMUK up 76-75 with just over 76 seconds left in the extra period. Nearly 50 second later, Lacy made both of his free throw attempts to give UTPB a one-point lead. Frazier followed with a drive down the lane and nailed his contested shot for the game-winning points.
The Javelinas return to the hardwood tomorrow at 6 p.m. against Texas A&M International in the final game of the Emerald Beach Hotel Javelina Men's Basketball Tip-Off Challenge.
