STEPHENVILLE, Texas – A 24-2 run over the final 6:54 propelled the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team to a 62-44 victory over Concordia Irvine Saturday afternoon during the TexAnn Tip-Off Classic in Wisdom Gym.
With the win, the Javelinas improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2007-08. The Eagles remain winless at 0-2 in their first year transitioning to Division II.
Kaylin Roher scored a game-high 21 points with four three-pointers and added four steals.
TaSheena Moore contributed 10 points and dished out a team-high three assists.
Defensively,
Joslyn Smith grabbed a team best nine boards off the bench and she, along with
Ashley Viera, were credited with three steals.
For CUI, Haley Brown led the team with 10 points. Both Gaby Johnson and Brittany Stafford retrieved 10 rebounds. Zoe Goss blocked a game-high five shots.
The Javelinas started the contest on a 7-2 run that was capped off a by free throw from
Jamesha Wade. The Eagles scored the final four points of the first period, all coming on free throws courtesy of Stafford.
Eight of the first 10 points in the second were scored by the Blue and Gold spanning a little over six minutes. CUI responded with a 9-4 run to end the quarter but TAMUK lead 23-22 at halftime.
The Javelinas were in front for most of the third period until Brown nailed a three-pointer at the 1:48 mark to give the Eagles a 38-35 advantage.
Kyra Bauer converted two free throw attempts to make it a one-point game heading to the final quarter.
CUI took their largest lead of the game at 42-38 with 7:03 remaining in the contest. TAMUK responded with the large run to close out the game. Roher scored 11 points, Moore added five and Smith contributed four during the scoring stretch.
The Blue and Gold return to the court Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the road against Texas A&M International.
