KINGSVILLE, Texas – Five Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball players scored at least six points but the Javelinas fell short to Angelo State 58-45 Saturday afternoon in Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Ashley Viera led the Blue and Gold with 10 points while adding five assists and four rebounds.
After allowing a jumper on the first possession of the game, the Javelinas stormed back with six straight points that began with a free throw from
Lauren Jay. Both
Alexis Copeland and
Micah Weaver added two points and
Kyra Bauer contributed with a made charity stripe attempt during the stretch.
Michelle Wagner made 1-of-2 at the line to increase TAMUK's lead to 11-6 at the 11:30 mark. Two quick layups by Diamalises Riverea of the Rambelles cut the score to only one 35 seconds later.
Following two free throws by Jay, ASU scored four straight to take a 14-13 advantage.
Both teams went without a made basket until Weaver hit a jumper from the left wing with 6:31 left on the clock. That began a 9-0 run for the Javelinas that Bauer capped off with a three-pointer.
The Rambelles end the run with a jumper with 1:49 until halftime. The basket ended a 6:56 scoring drought for them.
Copeland drove the lane for a layup for the final points of the period to put TAMUK up 24-16.
Opening the second half with a jumper from the block was Jay. Her basket gave the Blue and Gold their first double-digit lead of the year.
ASU responded with three consecutive points but two free throws by Jay and Viera put TAMUK up 32-21 for their largest advantage of the season. The Belles responded with an 8-3 run to cut the differential to five with just over 13 minutes to play.
Buckets from Jay and Robertson increased TAMUK's lead to nine but ASU responded by scoring 10-0 run to go back on top. Viera made both charity stripe attempts on a 1-and-1 to give the Javelinas a 40-39 lead.
Weaver nailed a turn around, fade away jumper to with just over five and half minutes to go that gave the Blue and Gold a one-point lead. ASU came back with six straight points to give them the lead for good.
Jay also reached double-figures with 10 points. She and
Ope Ibrahim both grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Weaver added eight points while both Copeland and Robertson contributed six apiece.
The Blue and Gold close out their homestand on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico.
