KINGSVILE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-15, 0-5 LSC) dropped their 16th straight game to set a new school record as they fell 72-55 to No. 11/14 West Texas A&M (12-2, 3-1 LSC) Saturday afternoon at Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Hampton Inn Court. The Javelinas surpassed the previous mark that was set from November 29, 2003 to January 27, 2004.
The Lady Buffs scored the first seven points of the game but taking them nearly five minutes to do so. A layup from
Ruby Robertson on the next possession started a 10-2 run for the Blue and Gold as they went up 10-9. During the streak,
Ashley Viera made three straight layups..
WT responded with a three courtesy of Michaela Neuhaus the next time down the court. The basket kicked started a 15-2 run for them with
Lauren Jay getting the lone basket for TAMUK.
Viera made a long-distance attempt as the Javelinas scored 9 of the next 11 points to cut their deficit to 26-21 with a little less than three and a half minutes until intermission.
Coming back with eight consecutive points was the Lady Buffs. Viera made a free throw and
Sheridan Pilcher hit a layup with eight second to play to pull TAMUK within 34-24 at the end of the first 20-minute period.
WT extended their lead to 53-34 eight minutes into the second half. A jumper by Weaver jump started an 8-2 run that was capped off by two free throws from Robertson.
The lead for the Lady Buffs stayed around 14 until Robertson converted an old-fashion three-point play to cut the deficit to 62-51 at the 6:07 mark. WT responded with eight consecutive points until Viera made two charity stripe attempts. The Lady Buffs closed the game by outscoring TAMUK 10-4.
Both Viera and Weaver scored a game-high 14 points. Viera scored 10 of her total in the first half while Weaver tallied 12 after intermission. Robertson also reached double-figures with 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting and was 5-for-7 at the free throw line.
Jay put together a performance of eight points, seven rebounds and tied her career-high with four steals.
Kyra Bauer matched her with seven boards and dished out a team-high three assists along with
Michelle Wagner.
The Blue and Gold travel to take on Cameron on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
