PORTALES, N.M. – Despite
Micah Weaver scoring a team-high 18 points, the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-14, 0-4 LSC) fell 77-58 Wednesday night at Eastern New Mexico (5-8, 1-2 LSC) in Greyhound Arena. The loss was the 15th in-a-row for the Javelinas to tie the school record that was set during the 2003-04 season.
Both team traded the first six baskets of the game until the Zia scored six straight points in a 55-second span. Weaver snapped the streak with a jumper to cut the Blue and Gold's deficit to 12-8.
ENMU increased their advantage to 13, 39-26, following a layup by Jordyn Cooper just before halftime.
Weaver opened the second half with a jumper off a pass from
Lauren Jay. The Zias though stretched their lead to 55-35 just under six minutes into the period.
Ashley Viera nailed a three-pointer and
Ruby Robertson converted a layup on the next possession for a 5-0 run for TAMUK. An 11-4 run by the Zias increased their lead to 25 with 6:24 left on the clock.
Eastern went up 77-46 with just over four minutes to play. An old-fashion three-point play by Jay which she followed with a layup kicked off a 12-0 run to close out the contest. The final points of the run came on a three-pointer by
Tessa Ramirez.
Jay also reached double-figures with 11 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, along with
Ope Ibrahim. Weaver matched her career-high of four assists while Ramirez and Viera both dished out three. Defensively, Ibrahim blocked two shots for the third time this season.
The Blue and Gold return to the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court on Saturday against No. 11/14 West Texas A&M at 2 p.m.
