SAN ANGELO, Texas (Volleyball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (7-4, 1-3 LSC) threatened to end Angelo State University's (9-1, 4-0 LSC) seven-match win streak on Saturday afternoon at the Junell Center, but the Belles ended their home stand with a 25-22, 26-24, 25-21 victory over the Javelinas.
Â
Despite registering 12.0 team blocks and 60 digs, Angelo State, a team that received 83 votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top-25 Poll, closed out each set on a late rally.
Â
Stephanie Johns led all players with seven blocks,
Kelsey Washington added five assisted blocks and
Casey Klobedans recorded her second double-double of the season with 29 assists and 13 digs. Johns' 214 career assisted blocks rank fifth in school history and her 51 solo blocks are tied for seventh-most. With her 10 kills today, Washington now has 1,100 career kills, fifth-most in school history.
Â
"We did a great job defensively today," said head coach
Tanya Allen. "Kelsey and Stephanie both did a great job blocking and Casey was very active as a defender. Offensively, we had too many hitting errors and got passive. We need to focus on keeping our hitting percentage up, especially in a tough conference like the LSC."
Â
Tied at 22-22 in the opening set, the Belles scored three unanswered points to clinch the first set, 25-22. However, the Javelinas looked poised to even up the score, leading ASU 23-20 before Angelo State ended the second set on a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the Lone Star Conference match.
Â
Defensively, the Belles were led by Shelby Wilt's 21 digs. Mallory Blauser and Abbie Lynn led the Belles' offense with 13 kills apiece.
Â
The Javelinas conclude their quick three-game road trip in Laredo on Tuesday, Sept. 23 when they face Texas A&M International University (0-9) at 7 p.m. at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Center.Â
