ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-8) opened the Seawolf Hoops Classic Friday night against the hosts and third-ranked Alaska-Anchorage (10-0), falling 90-49 in the Alaska Airlines Center in front of 894 people.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 16-6 lead and never looked back.
Lauren Jay made a layup at the 13:58 mark of the first half for the Javelinas first made field goal of the game. Prior to the two-point basket, TAMUK went 6-for-6 at the free throw line as
Michelle Wagner hit four and
Kyra Bauer converted her two attempts.
At intermission, UAA led 58-26 as they went 23-of-37 (62.2 percent) from the field including hitting 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from downtown. The Blue and Gold were held to only 19 shots in the period while making eight and were 9-for-12 (75.0 percent) at the charity stripe.
The largest lead for the Seawolves came with 16:39 on the clock as they went ahead by 42. The Javelinas were able to cut their deficit to 35 three times with the last coming with just over seven minutes to play at 78-43 on a jumper by
Ruby Robertson.
Micah Weaver paced Kingsville with 11 points and six rebounds. She also tied for a team-high two assists with Wagner. Both Robertson and Wagner contributed eight points apiece.
Defensively,
Jennifer Ortiz and Jay each had two blocks while
Tessa Ramirez came away with two steals.
TAMUK conclude their trip to the Last Frontier Saturday night against Alaska-Fairbanks with an 8 p.m. CT tipoff.
