ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Lauren Jay scored a season-high 17 points but a second half surge by Alaska Fairbanks (8-4) propelled them to a 75-60 win over the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team (0-9) Saturday in the Alaska Airlines Center. The game was the second for both teams in the Seawolf Hoops Classic.
Scoring the first four points of the game was
Micah Weaver on layups in the first 56 seconds of the game. TAMUK eventually took a 19-9 lead after a layup by Jay with 9:10 to go until intermission.
The Nanooks slowly chipped away at the Blue and Gold's advantage through the rest of the half. The Javelinas went into halftime with a lead for the third time this season at 33-30.
Alaska began the second 20-minute period by scoring 10 of the first 13 points. A layup from Weaver cut the Javelinas' deficit to 40-38 at the 17:04 mark. The Nanooks then went on a 28-4 run over an 8:11 span to take control of the game.
With the outcome nearly sealed, the Javelinas kept fighting and scored 13 consecutive points during which Jay scored seven points, including the last five.
Six straight points for Alaska sealed the game for them as they went up 75-55 with 87 seconds to play.
Kyra Bauer made two free throws and
Tessa Ramirez nailed a three-pointer to close out the scoring in the contest.
Three other Javelinas reached double-digits with
Michelle Wagner and Ramirez tallying 11 apiece and Weaver adding 10. Wagner posted nearly all her points at the free throw line as she went 8-for-12.
Ramirez led the team with four assists while
Ope Ibrahim grabbed a team-high six rebounds off the bench. Both
Ruby Robertson and Weaver were credited with a squad-best two steals as well.
Following a break for Christmas, the Blue and Gold return to action on January 3 against Our Lady of the Lake at 1 p.m. in the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
