SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Men's Basketball) – Troy Jones finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to lead Texas A&M University-Kingsville (3-4) but the Javelinas could not overcome a woeful shooting night as St. Mary's University (3-3) defeated the Hogs, 60-55, on Tuesday evening at Bill Greehey Arena.
With the loss, the Javelinas split the regular season series with the Rattlers.
Jordan Jahr went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line to lead all TAMUK scorers with 15.
Jamar Goodwin was a menace on the defensive end, recording three blocks and three steals.
The Rattlers opened the game going 12-of-21 from the field in the first half to take a 31-25 lead heading into the half.
Offense was at a premium in the second half and the Hogs outscored St. Mary's 30-29 despite shooting 29 percent in the period. Trailing by 14 with 8:20 remaining, the full court TAMUK defense held the Rattlers scoreless until the 3:30 mark, going on a 12-0 run to cut its deficit to two, 51-49. In the five-minute span, the Javelinas went 6-for-6 from the charity stipe and forced five turnovers.
The Javelinas head to Laredo for a nonconference tilt at Texas A&M International University (3-3) tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
The Hogs are 14-4 all-time against the Dustdevils, but TAMIU swept both matchups against Texas A&M-Kingsville last season.
