KINGSVILLE, Texas (Women's Basketball) – A slow start derailed any comeback hopes as Texas A&M University-Kingsville (0-7) fell to St. Edward's University (6-2), 68-44, on Saturday evening at the Gil H. Steinke Physical Education Center-Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
Turnovers mounted and the Javelinas were on the wrong end of a 19-6 game with 11:59 remaining in the opening half.
Adelaide Wenzel came off the bench to score five points and pull down four rebounds in 11 minutes of action, but the Blue and Gold entered the locker room trailing 39-18 after 20 minutes.
Beginning the second half with a spark, Texas A&M-Kingsville scored the frame's first seven points before a Hilltopper jumper found the bottom of the net with 14:54 remaining.
Ruby Robertson nailed a jumper to pull the Javelinas to within 14 with nearly 13 minutes left in the contest.
Robertson finished with seven points and 10 rebounds and
Lauren Jay added a team-high 11 points to go with her seven rebounds. Sydney Thomas and Kathleen Brisbane each scored 12 points to lead all scorers and the Hilltoppers finished with 13 steals.
The Javelinas head to Alaska for back-to-back matchups against nationally-ranked University of Alaska-Anchorage and University of Alaska-Fairbanks on Dec. 19 and 20, respectively.
