DURANT, Okla. (Women's Basketball) – Texas A&M University-Kingsville (0-5) led by one, 48-47, with 4:59 left to play and despite falling behind after free throws, the Javelinas kept it a one possession contest with 16 seconds remaining. However Southeastern Oklahoma State University (7-0) ended the month of November with a 57-51 win on Sunday afternoon in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.
Texas A&M-Kingsville scored 29 points off SE's 20 turnovers and outrebounded the Savage Storm 46-to-31. Entering the contest ranked No. 4 nationally with 11.8 three-point field goals per game, Southeastern Oklahoma, who received a vote in the latest USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll, finished 6-of-21 from three-point range and held the team's leading scorer, Emily Williams, to 12 points. Williams began the nonconference tilt averaging 20.0 points per game.
The Hogs were scoreless for two-plus minutes, allowing the Savage Storm to take a 52-48 lead before a jumper by
Kyra Bauer, TAMUK's first field goal in three minutes, cut its deficit to two with 2:23 remaining. That would be all SE needed as the Storm improved to 7-0, defeating the Javelinas, 57-51.
Ruby Robertson led the Hogs with 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to go with two steals for her first career double-double.
Michelle Wagner pitched in 10 points, six rebounds and four steals off the bench and
Ashley Viera added seven points and two steals in 18 minutes. Bauer finished with 10 rebounds and
Tessa Ramirez swiped three passes.
SE opened the contest with a 5-0 lead until Texas A&M-Kingsville got on the board with 15:23 to go. A run by the Storm gave the home team a double-digit lead, 17-7, with 8:21 remaining but the resilient Hogs rallied back and tied the contest twice in the first half. However, Southeastern Oklahoma State entered halftime with a 29-24 lead.
The Javelinas head to Nacogdoches for an exhibition contest against NCAA Division I affiliate Stephen F. Austin University (3-3) on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
